Warriors Suffer First Home Defeat Saturday To Stars

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team won the first set over Dominican, but the visitors rallied to win the final three as the Stars handed the Warriors their first home setback of the season Saturday in a battle of two of the NACC's top teams inside the Recreation Complex, 3-1. WLC, which has clinched a NACC Tournament berth, is tied for third in the conference with one league match remaining.

  • The beginning of the tightly-contested first set featured five ties and four lead changes. The Warriors took the lead for good at 7-6 and followed with two consecutive points. The hosts extended their advantage to as many as six points at 21-15, but the Stars closed within 23-22. A service error and attack error gave WLC the opening set win, 25-23. The Green and White hit a team-high .238 in the opening set with 16 kills.
  • The start of the second set was back-and-forth as well, as it featured three ties and two lead changes. Dominican led by six points at 14-8 and later posted a set-high seven-point lead at 22-15. Wisconsin Lutheran scored five straight points to cut its deficit to just two at 22-20, but DU earned three of the last five points to even the match with a 25-22 win.
  • The Stars sprinted out to a 10-2 lead in the third set after the Warriors scored the first point of the set. WLC used two separate scoring runs of 4-0 and 5-1 to get back within 18-12, but the visitors won the third set 25-14. DU hit a match-high .333 in the third set.
  • The fourth set featured more back-and-forth action with three ties and a pair of lead changes. With the score knotted at 11-11, Dominican scored five straight points only to see Wisconsin Lutheran come back and score five straight of its own for a 17-17 tie. The Stars broke the tie with three straight and went onto win the set and match, 25-20.

  • Freshman Jenna Charron (Appleton, Wis.) and sophomore Carly Heuer (Germantown, Wis.) paced the Warriors with 15 and 11 kills, respectively.
  • Freshman Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) and sophomore Michelle Haling (Antioch, Ill.) dished out 18 and 10 assists each. Sarles added a double-double with 10 digs.
  • Freshman Ally Goba (Mukwonago, Wis.) led three players in double-digit digs with 21. Sophomore Abby Raasch (Stillwater, Minn.) recorded a match-high five block assists.

  • Gabija Sinickaite posted a match-high 17 kills for the Stars, who won their sixth straight match. Anastasia Labadessa added a double-double with 23 assists and 10 digs.

  • The Warriors conclude conference play Wednesday when they welcome Concordia Wisconsin (19-7, 10-1 NACC) to the Recreation Complex for a 7:00 p.m. first serve. Live stats and video will be available for the match at WLCSports.com.
