Late Surge Leads Warriors To Fifth Straight Win

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Senior Andrew Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) scored a game-high 31 points and the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team closed the game on a 27-7 run over the final 9:29 en route to an 82-72 come-from-behind win over Dominican Saturday afternoon inside the Igini Sports Forum. The Warriors won their fifth straight game to remain tied atop the NACC standings with a 12-2 record.

  • The two teams traded leads three times amongst three ties through the first four minutes of the game. The Warriors then used an 11-4 run to take their largest lead of the first half, a 20-13 advantage with 12:32 left.
  • The Stars knotted the score at 24-24, and after three more lead exchanges, closed out the final four and a half minutes on an 11-4 run to take a 41-39 lead into the locker room at intermission. Dominican shot 51.5 percent from the floor in the opening half, compared to Wisconsin Lutheran's 40 percent.
  • DU scored the first six points of the second half to take an eight-point lead less than two minutes in.
  • The Green and White cut its deficit to four points at 51-47 at the 15:13 mark, but the Stars later increased their lead to a game-high 10 points at 65-55 with 9:46 remaining.
  • The Warriors proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to come within just one point after a jumper from senior Andrew Wojcik (Brookfield, Wis.). WLC took its first lead of the second half less than two minutes later on another jumper from senior Colin Biesterfeld (West Bend, Wis.).
  • Dominican tied the score at 70 apiece with five minutes to play, but Wisconsin Lutheran put together a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) netted five points during the run as the Green and White closed out the 82-72 win.

  • Bruggink posted his fifth 30-point game of the season, finishing with a game-high 31 points. Wojcik tied a career high with 13 points to round out the Warriors in double figures.
  • Bruggink, Colin Biesterfeld, and sophomore Zach Zuleger (West Bend, Wis.) totaled seven rebounds each as WLC out-rebounded DU 41-36, including 11-4 on the offensive end.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran concluded the game shooting 43.8 percent (32-for-73).
  • The Warriors' two lowest turnovers totals of the season have both come against the Stars.
  • The Green and White extended its winning streak to five games after winning for the third straight time over Dominican.

  • Jackson Smith scored a team-high 24 points to pace the Stars, who shot 48.4 percent (30-for-62) from the floor. Dylan Anderson added 12 points off the bench. DU out-scored WLC on fast-break points, 11-0.
