Warriors Topped By Stars Tuesday On The Road

RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team cut a double-digit deficit down to just five points with three and a half minutes left, but was held scoreless the rest of the way as the Warriors were defeated by Dominican 78-61 on Tuesday night inside the Igini Sports Forum.

  • The Warriors fell behind 4-0 just over two minutes into a fast-moving first quarter where the two teams were whistled for just two personal fouls. WLC scored the next nine points, including six from junior Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) for a 9-6 lead. Senior Kelly Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) added a three-pointer to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 12-6 lead, its largest of the game, with 4:09 left in the opening stanza. The Stars trailed 14-11 but went on an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead before sophomore Ally Gough (Horicon, Wis.) closed the quarter with a three for a 19-17 deficit after one.
  • The two teams traded leads six times through the first 2:18 of the second quarter as Dominican held a slim lead at 25-24. The Warriors came within one again on another Kelly Tramburg three, but DU scored five straight for a six-point advantage. WLC responded with a 5-0 spurt of its own but the Stars netted the final six points of the first half for a 43-36 halftime lead. Wisconsin Lutheran shot an even 50 percent in the quarter, while the Stars were even better at 58.8 percent.
  • The Green and White scored the first two points of the third quarter, but could get no closer than five for the remainder of the period. A 10-2 run by the hosts gave them a third quarter-best 13-point lead at 58-45 with 2:08 left in the frame. Kelly Tramburg and sophomore Morgan Tramburg (Fall River, Wis.) combined for the final five points of the quarter as the visitors trailed 58-50 after three.
  • Dominican held a 64-52 lead over the Warriors with 6:56 remaining in the fourth quarter, but a 9-2 run by WLC trimmed the deficit to just five points with 3:31 left. Kelly Tramburg, Brug, and Morgan Tramburg each tallied points during the run. Wisconsin Lutheran couldn't get any closer though as it missed its last five shot attempts and was held scoreless for the final three and a half minutes. DU sealed the game by going a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the closing minutes to earn its first-ever win over the Green and White.

  • Kelly Tramburg led four players in double figures with 19 points, including four three-pointers. Sophomore Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) added 12 points, while Brug and Morgan Tramburg finished with 10 apiece.
  • Kelly Tramburg pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and Morgan Tramburg dished out five assists.
  • The Warriors shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61) for the game and 36.8 percent (7-for-19) from three. WLC assisted on 19 of its 24 made field goals.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran made eight trips to the charity stripe, making six throws. It marked the seventh time this season with fewer than 10 free throw attempts.

  • Timiya Ray scored a game-high 23 points to pace four Stars in double figures. Alexis Hoskins added 13 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Dominican shot 43.8 percent (28-for-64) for the game and was perfect from the charity stripe at 15-for-15. DU out-scored WLC 15-5 in points off turnovers and 20-11 in second chance points.
