Brug's Big Night Sends Warriors To Season-Opening Win

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Senior Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) posted her fourth career double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds, both game-highs, to pace the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team to a season-opening 57-47 win over MSOE on Friday night inside the Recreation Complex. It was the Warriors' first game in 335 days.

  • The visiting Raiders scored eight straight points to jump out to an 8-2 lead over the Warriors with 6:03 left in the first quarter. It marked the largest lead of the game for the Red and White.
  • WLC rattled off six straight points to even the score behind contributions from Brug, freshman Kaitlyn Shadoski (Janesville, Wis.), and junior Kalies Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.). The score stood knotted at 12 apiece through the opening quarter.
  • The two teams traded baskets over the first six minutes of the second quarter, and a layup from Brug gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 23-20 lead with 3:22 left before halftime.
  • MSOE evened the contest at 27-27 before intermission with a three as the two teams headed into the locker tied for the seventh time in the game.
  • The Green and White netted the first three points of the second half and never relinquished their lead. Junior Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) capped a 7-2 scoring spurt with a three at the 3:27 mark of the third quarter for a six-point advantage.
  • Brug extended the Warriors' lead to seven points with 1:30 left in the period before a MSOE layup cut the lead to five heading into the final frame.
  • WLC opened the fourth quarter with an 8-1 scoring run to extend its lead to 52-40 with 6:48 left.
  • Birkholz gave Wisconsin Lutheran its largest lead of the game with 1:31 left with her second triple of the night.

  • Brug paced three Warriors in double figures with a game-high 22 points while also corraling 14 rebounds. The senior forward went 11-for-13 from the floor.
  • Freshman Sam Leisemann (Fall River, Wis.) added 10 points and 14 rebounds in her collegiate debut.
  • Shadoski was the third player for WLC in double digits with 10 points.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the floor, but went just 4-for-21 from beyond the arc and 7-for-23 from the free throw line.
  • The win marked the seventh straight conference-opening victory for the Green and White.

  • Kayla Barreto paced the Raiders with 17 points, while Amy Reiser added 12. 
  • MSOE was held to just 26.7 percent shooting for the game, including just 1-for-16 from three-point range.

  • Wisconsin Lutheran plays the second game of its series with the Raiders tomorrow at 5 p.m. inside the Recreation Complex.
