Big Third Quarter Seals Season-Opening Win Over MLC

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team recovered from a sluggish start with a big third quarter en route to a 57-38 win over Martin Luther in its season opener on Friday night at the Paul F. Knueppel Classic inside the Recreation Complex.

  • The Warriors turned a 10-9 first-quarter deficit into a 17-11 lead following an 8-1 scoring run. WLC held a four-point lead at 17-13 after the opening quarter despite being out-shot 50 percent to 33.3 percent.
  • Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the second quarter as they combined to shoot just 5-for-25 from the floor. Wisconsin Lutheran had built its largest lead of the first half at 22-15, before the Knights closed to within just two points at halftime, 23-21.
  • The Green and White broke the game open in the third quarter, out-scoring MLC 19-5 and holding the visitors to just one made field goal in the period. The Warriors went into the fourth quarter with a 42-26 lead after shooting a game-high 46.7 percent from the floor in the frame. 
  • WLC extended its lead to a game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter after a pair of free throws from sophomore Nicole Jongebloed (Horicon, Wis.). The hosts won their second straight season opener by the final of 57-38.
  • Senior Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) scored 18 points to lead all scorers. Four other players scored six points each for Wisconsin Lutheran.
  • Senior Abby Vavra (Mukwonago, Wis.) corralled a career-best 11 rebounds.
  • Despite being out-rebounded 45-43, the Green and White controlled the paint by a 30-18 scoring margin.
  • The Warriors forced 25 turnovers and turned them into a 21-1 advantage in points off turnovers.
