Warriors Surpass Century Mark To Remain Undefeated

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Junior Alex VanCrete (Green Lake, Wis.) posted a career-high 28 points as the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team overcame a double-digit first-half deficit to remain undefeated with a 104-91 victory over Lakeland on Saturday night inside the Recreation Complex. The win marked the 17th straight home conference victory for the Warriors.

  • VanCrete got the Warriors on the board with a three after the Muskies opened the scoring with a midrange jumper. Lakeland found success from the floor in the opening 10 minutes of action, connecting on 11 of its first 13 attempts to take a 33-22 advantage with 9:22 remaining in the first half. 
  • Freshman Josh Bruggink (Brookfield, Wis.) cut the lead back down to single digits with a three, and junior Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) converted a three-point play to bring WLC within five at 33-28. Wisconsin Lutheran continued to shrink the Muskies' lead, as senior Randy Johnson Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Bernhagen each made a pair of free throws to make it a one-point game.
  • Bruggink gave the Warriors the lead with a corner three and sparked a 13-0 run for the Green and White. VanCrete scored six points on the run and Bruggink added a layup as WLC took a 47-38 lead with five minutes to play in the opening half. Lakeland was able to keep the game within single digits as the Warriors entered halftime with a 58-50 advantage.
  • The Muskies brought the game back within three in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Warriors responded with seven consecutive points to extend the lead back to 10. Lakeland managed to keep the game within reach until VanCrete scored six unanswered points to give WLC a 14-point advantage at 77-63 with 13:06 to play.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran's lead continued to grow, reaching a game-high 20 points at 95-75 with 5:39 left to play. The Muskies were unable to get back in the game, as the Warriors crossed the century mark for a 104-91 win.

  • VanCrete and Bernhagen led the way among four Warriors scoring in double figures. VanCrete netted a career-high 28 points on 9-of-11 shooting and Bernhagen added 22 points along with four steals. Freshman Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) scored 19, the fourth game this season he's scored at least 18 points. Bruggink rounded out the double-digit scorers, scoring 10 points off the bench.
  • WLC shot 47.5 percent (38-of-80) from the floor and 25.8 percent (8-of-31) from deep. The Warriors were nearly perfect from the line, connecting on 95.2 percent (20-of-21) from the charity stripe.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran found success on the boards, out-rebounding Lakeland 44-32 and 18-8 on the offensive glass. Junior Zach Zuleger (West Bend, Wis.) pulled down 13 rebounds for the second consecutive game, including seven offensive rebounds. The rebounding advantage helped the Warriors out-score the Muskies 26-5 in second-chance points.
  • The Green and White won the turnover battle 14-8 and turned 10 steals into a 23-6 points off turnovers advantage.

  • The Muskies finished with five players in double figures, led by 21 points from Earl Lewis and 18 from Trenton Nickel. Jequan Pegeese recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists.
  • Lakeland shot 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the floor and 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from beyond the arc.
