WLC Drops Pair Of 5-4 Decisions In Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team opened its 2021 spring season today with a pair of non-conference road dual matches in Iowa. The Warriors were edged by St. Ambrose and Coe by identical 5-4 scores at the Kohawks' Clark Racquet Center.

• The Warriors faced an early deficit to the Bees after dropping all three doubles matches by results of 8-4, 8-6, and 8-6. WLC controlled singles play by winning four of six flights. Freshman Gabrielle Medema (Appleton, Wis.) won her match at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Freshmen Izzy Hawley (Allen Park, Mich.), Jena Smith (Lake Mills, Wis.), and Sky Pope (Macon, Ga.) were also winners at No. 4 through No. 6 singles. Hawley won 1-6, 6-4, 10-2, Smith secured a 6-4, 6-2 victory, and Pope claimed a 6-2, 6-1 triumph.
• Medema and freshman Alex Sturm (Hartland, Wis.) posted Wisconsin Lutheran's only doubles win by an 8-1 final. Hawley and Smith were edged 8-7 at No. 2. The Green and White garnered three wins in singles play vs. the Kohawks. Freshman Katelynn Haskell (Santa Maria, Calif.) collected a three-set (3-6, 6-3, 10-8) win at No. 3 singles. Smith, who won via forfeit at No. 4, and Pope (6-1, 6-0) again posted singles victories for the Warriors. 

• Meg Chadick and Kaylee Camp combined to post 2-0 records for SAU, which won singles matches at No. 1 and No. 3.
• Eliza Sundermann, Emma Lassen, and Mikayla Heath each went 2-0 on the day for Coe. 

• The Warriors play their first home dual match of the season next Saturday when they host St. Scholastica (0-0). First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Wisconsin Athletic Club in Hartland.
