WLC Splits Weekend Series With Eagles

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team lost its first game of the season on the second day of a weekend series against Edgewood 75-49 on Saturday inside the Recreation Complex. The NACC North's top-seeded team will host Lakeland on Thursday in the opening round of the NACC Tournament.

  • Junior Jenna Mace (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) scored the first four points of the game with a pair of layups to help the Warriors take a 4-0 lead in the first three minutes. Mace added one more cross-key layup following the Eagles opening basket to maintain the four-point advantage at 6-2.
  • Edgewood responded with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to force a Wisconsin Lutheran timeout. Freshman Kaitlyn Shadoski (Janesville, Wis.) knocked down a three coming out of the timeout but the Eagles led by seven at 18-11 after the first quarter.
  • The Eagles opened the second-quarter scoring with a three, but freshman Sam Leisemann (Fall River, Wis.) converted a pair of layups to cut the deficit back to single digits at 21-15. The Warriors were unable to get any closer, and a 7-0 Edgewood run to close the half put the visitors up 37-24 at the break.
  • A couple minutes into the second half, the Eagles rattled off 13 unanswered points to extend their lead to 24 at 52-28. Junior Kalies Birkholz (Watertown, Wis.) shut down the run with a layup and threes from both Leisemann and Birkholz sparked a 13-0 WLC run spanning the final minute of the third quarter and opening two of the fourth.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran was unable to get any closer, and Edgewood earned the weekend split with a 75-49 road victory.

  • Shadoski paced the team with 12 points. Leisemann finished with 11, and Mace added 10 to round out the Warriors in double figures.
  • WLC shot 30.3 percent (20-of-66) from the floor and 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc.
  • Senior Amanda Brug (Sturtevant, Wis.) and Leisemann shared the team lead with six rebounds, while Brug and Mace each finished with three assists.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran, which committed fewer than 10 turnovers for the third straight game, out-scored the Eagles 20-9 in points off turnovers.

  • Paige Banks led four Eagles scoring in double digits with 14 points off the bench. As a team, Edgewood shot 55.6 percent (30-of-54) from the field and connected on 40.0 percent (6-of-15) from three.
  • Bria Lemirande totaled eight points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in the win.

  • The top-seeded Warriors host Lakeland (6-5, 5-5 NACC) in a NACC Tournament Divisional Semifinal on Thursday inside the Recreation Complex. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
