Stoltz Engineers Road Win Over MSOE

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Freshman Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) scored a game-high 21 points to lead four players in double figures as the Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team used an early scoring run and never looked back in a 77-65 road win over the MSOE Raiders on Monday night inside Edgar Hotchkin Arena. The win gives the Warriors their first 3-0 start since the 2007-2008 season.

  • The Raiders built an early 8-4 lead over the Warriors, but WLC took its first lead of the game thanks to an 8-0 run fueled by six straight points from Stoltz.
  • Junior Alex VanCrete (Green Lake, Wis.) forced a second MSOE timeout after knocking down his team's third trifecta of the first half for a 22-15 lead at the 10:40 mark of the opening stanza.
  • The hosts fought back to even the score at 26 apiece and then again at 30-30 with just under four minutes to play. Wisconsin Lutheran went back in front behind five of the final 10 points of the half from junior Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.).
  • The Green and White went into halftime with a 40-37 lead despite shooting 38.2 percent from the floor, compared to the Raiders' 55.6 percent.
  • The Warriors started the second half on a 10-2 run sparked by three-pointers from Stoltz and sophomore Trevor Stiede (Pulaski, Wis.) for an 11-point advantage.
  • WLC's lead hovered between eight and 10 points for nearly five minutes before MSOE closed to within five points with 9:44 left.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran answered with eight straight points to extend its lead to 13 and the hosts came no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
  • The Green and White built their largest lead of the game at 19 points (77-58) on junior Zach Zuleger's (West Bend, Wis.) layup with 3:45 on the clock.

  • Stoltz led four Warriors in double figures with a game-best 21 points, including a perfect 8-for-8 from the charity stripe. Bernhagen and VanCrete followed with 15 and 14 points, respectively, and Stiede rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11.
  • VanCrete grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while Bernhagen and Zuleger added seven each. WLC out-rebounded MSOE 44-31 and out-scored the hosts 16-6 in second chance opportunities. 
  • Wisconsin Lutheran shot 39.3 percent (24-for-61) from the floor, but capitalized on its free throw chances, making 23 of its 30 attempts.
  • The Warriors and Raiders have alternated wins over their last seven meetings in the all-time series.

  • Michael Pitrof scored 13 points to pace four Raiders in double figures. 
  • MSOE finished the game shooting 42.6 percent (23-for-54), but went just 3-for-13 from three-point range.
