WLC Splits Five-Set Thrillers With CUW

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team split an afternoon doubleheader against NACC foe Concordia Wisconsin in a pair of five-set thrillers inside the Recreation Complex. The Warriors claimed match one behind 15 kills from sophomore Jenna Charron (Appleton, Wis.), before dropping match two in five sets again to the visiting Falcons.

  • With both teams tied early in the opening set, a Falcons error and a kill from Jenna Charron gave the Warriors a 10-8 advantage. Concordia Wisconsin evened the score at 15 midway through the set, and later scored five consecutive points to take a 20-15 lead and forced a Wisconsin Lutheran timeout. A three-point WLC run, capped by two service aces by junior Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) brought the Warriors back within three, but the Falcons scored the final two points to claim the first set 25-20.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran scored the first four points of set two, and added another run of five straight to extend the gap to 9-2. WLC pushed the advantage to 10 at 14-4 following a kill by Jenna Charron and a Falcons error. CUW rallied, cutting the deficit down to just three, but another kill from Jenna Charron capped the Warriors second set win at 25-22.
  • Concordia Wisconsin took a four-point lead at 11-7 in the third set, but WLC responded with a pair of kills from Mercedes Pye to cut the lead down to one. The Falcons closed the set with an 11-3 run to win 25-16.
  • CUW raced out to a 7-3 lead in set four, but the Warriors evened the score at 10 on a kill from Jenna Charron. With the score tied at 14, WLC took a lead with a four-point run, and held off CUW as senior Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.) closed the set with a pair of kills to force a decisive fifth set.
  • Neither team led by more than two points throughout the fifth set, and the score remained even at 19. Wisconsin Lutheran forced a pair of attack errors to claim the first match of the day in five sets.
  • The Warriors finished with 54 kills and hit .143. Jenna Charron led the team with 15 kills while hitting a team-high .353. Sophomore Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) posted 41 assists, while sophomore Ally Goba (Mukwonago, Wis.) recorded 21 digs and three service aces. Mercedes Pye recorded a double-double of 14 digs and 13 kills.

  • The Warriors rattled off four straight points in the first set to take an early 5-2 lead. CUW brought the game back within one, but a 6-1 WLC run put the Green and White up 14-7. Wisconsin Lutheran added another run of seven consecutive points to coast to a 25-15 win in set one.
  • Another hot start helped the Warriors take a 5-1 lead in the second set, but the Falcons chipped away at the deficit to even the score at 13. Concordia Wisconsin took a four-point lead, but back-to-back kills from sophomore Rebecca Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and Mercedes Pye tied the set at 21. The Falcons took set two after closing with four straight points.
  • With Wisconsin Lutheran leading by one in the third set, CUW utilized a 10-1 run to take an eight-point advantage at 20-12 to force a WLC timeout. The Falcons claimed the third set behind a score of 25-16.
  • The Warriors fell behind in the fourth set but rallied and evened the score at 12. The score remained tied until Wisconsin Lutheran scored the final four points of the set to win 25-21. Junior Carly Heuer (Germantown, Wis.) and Alyssa Charron each recorded a kill to finish off the set.
  • WLC scored five straight points in the fifth set to take a 10-8 lead, but the Falcons scored seven of the final nine points to take match two in five sets.
  • Jenna Charron recorded a match-high 17 kills while Mercedes Pye added 10 kills and 14 digs for another double-double. WLC hit .132 as a team and finished with 48 kills. Sarles totaled a team-high 22 assists and shared the team lead with Goba in digs with 16.

  • Maycee Karpfinger led the Falcons in match one with 13 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. CUW finished with 58 kills and hit .176. Makenzie Vertz posted 23 assists and Sierra Lee led the team with 17 digs.
  • McKenna Nigl recorded 14 kills in match two, and the Falcons totaled 52 kills and a .150 hitting percentage. Vertz finished with 22 assists while Madelyn Alton posted 23 digs.

  • The Warriors travel across town to face MSOE (0-0, 0-0 NACC) in a doubleheader next Sunday with first serve scheduled for 10 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at WLCSports.com.
