Yockey Leads Warriors Over Regents In Football's Return

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Sophomore quarterback Nick Yockey (Gig Harbor, Wash.) threw for 390 yards and three touchdowns while running for a score to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College football team to a 28-14 win on Senior Day over Rockford Saturday afternoon at Raabe Stadium. The Warriors returned to the gridiron for the first time in 490 days and gave first-year head coach Eric Treske his first victory.

  • The Warriors drove into Regents territory on their first drive of the game after forcing a punt, but the drive stalled on an incomplete pass on the 31-yard line.
  • Rockford followed with a 14-play drive that ended on downs at WLC's 29-yard line and the hosts took over with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran went 71 yards on 12 plays that culminated with a Yockey four-yard touchdown pass to junior Justin Parbs (Milwaukee, Wis.) for a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
  • The Green and White came up with another big defensive stop at its one-yard line on RU's next drive to keep them off the scoreboard.
  • The Warriors finished off another 71-yard scoring drive two possessions later when Yockey found the corner of the endzone from two yards away seconds before halftime for a 13-0 lead following a failed extra point conversion.
  • Neither team could sustain much offensive rhythm in the third quarter as no drive went more than seven plays.
  • WLC's quick-strike offense came alive with 0:43 seconds left in the third quarter when Yockey connected with sophomore Jordan Jewell (Hartford, Wis.) for a 58-yard touchdown. The two-point pass from Yockey to freshman Mike DuPree (Milwaukee, Wis.) made it 21-0 Warriors after three quarters.
  • Freshman Pablo Zamudio (Waller, Texas) picked off a pass deep in WLC territory on the Regents' next drive to keep the visitors scoreless.
  • Rockford cracked the scoring column with 6:07 left in the game following a one-yard touchdown run that capped an eight-play, 44-yard drive.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran went back ahead by three scores just three plays into its next drive when Yockey found senior Cory Diedrick (Little Chute, Wis.) for a 67-yard touchdown hookup.
  • RU found the end zone one last time with 3:27 left after another one-yard touchdown run, but that proved to be the final points of the game.

  • Yockey completed 33 of 48 passes for 390 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 26 yards on four carries and a score.
  • Jewell and Diedrick each went over the 100-yard receiving mark, finishing with 103 and 100 respectively. Parbs led all receivers with seven catches totaling 62 yards.
  • The Warriors out-gained the Regents 439-409 despite running 13 fewer plays and totaling 23:51 in time of possession.
  • Senior Mykael Ignaszak (Cudahy, Wis.) and junior Ty Castillo (San Antonio, Texas) posted 13 and 10 tackles, respectively, to lead the defense.
  • WLC honored seniors Jeremy Berndt (Fall River, Wis.), Skylor Christensen (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Diedrick, Ignaszak, Mark Johnson (Maple Grove, Minn.), Jason Plaster (Appleton, Wis.), and Jackson Tracy (Racine, Wis.) during a pregame ceremony.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran won its 13th straight game over Rockford, the longest winning streak over any of its opponents. 

  • Jaelen Ray completed 22 of 37 passes for 210 yards. LaVar Johnson Jr. rushed for 113 yards and a score and caught three passes for 51 yards.
  • Jallen Bashford paced the Regents defense with nine tackles.
