Strong Second Half Leads Warriors To Senior Night Win

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team used a 20-1 scoring run to overcome a 10-point deficit in the second half and defeat Lake Forest 78-72 Tuesday on Senior Night inside the Recreation Complex. Senior Randy Johnson Jr. (Milwaukee, Wis.) scored a career-high 15 points in his first collegiate start to lead five players in double figures as WLC improved to 7-0 on Catalyst Court this season.

  • The Warriors led 5-2 early following Johnson Jr.'s first three-pointer of the game, and later held that same advantage at the 13:12 mark on a layup from freshman Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.).
  • WLC maintained a one-point lead at 19-18 on Johnson Jr.'s second trifecta of the half, but the Foresters answered with seven straight points to lead by six with just under seven minutes left in the half.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran came within two points on a pair of occasions, but a 10-2 run by the Foresters gave them their largest lead of the game with 3:20 left before halftime.
  • The Green and White trailed 38-33 at the halftime break after shooting 39.4 percent from the floor and committing eight turnovers.
  • The hosts were down just 38-37 early in the second half before LFC went on an 11-2 run to grab another 10-point lead with under 16 minutes left.
  • The Warriors then rattled off a 20-1 scoring run over a five-minute span to take control for a 59-50 lead. Johnson Jr. knocked down a trio of three-pointers with another coming from freshman Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) during the run.
  • The Foresters came back within one point at 61-60, but a three-point play from Stoltz started a 9-0 scoring run by WLC with just under five minutes left.
  • Junior Alex VanCrete (Green Lake, Wis.) hit a pair of free throws to give WLC its largest lead of the game at 78-66 with 1:57 on the clock. Lake Forest scored the game's final six points to bring the Warriors' winning margin to six. 

  • Johnson Jr. led five Warriors in double figures with 15 points on five three-pointers. Goetz chipped in with 13 points off the bench. Junior Zach Zuleger (West Bend, Wis.) posted his third double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
  • VanCrete finished with 11 points and nine rebounds and junior Drew Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis.) added 10 points.
  • Junior Grant Biesterfeld (West Bend, Wis.) dished out a team-high five assists to go along with eight points.
  • WLC, which has won 24 of its last 26 home games, shot 46.2 percent (30-for-65) from the floor and out-rebounded LFC 39-34.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran honored Biesterfeld, Stephen Baehman (Neenah, Wis.), Johnson Jr., and Zuleger during a pregame Senior Night ceremony. 

  • Johnny Roeser led three Foresters in double figures with a game-high 20 points. Adam Weingard added a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Lake Forest finished the game shooting 43.3 percent (26-for-60) from the floor.
