Women's Volleyball Claims NACC North Tourney Title

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team claimed the NACC North Division Tournament Championship following a sweep over Edgewood on Sunday afternoon inside the Recreation Complex. The second-seeded Warriors won 26-24, 25-20, and 25-12 over the fourth-seeded Eagles as junior Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) led the team with eight kills.

  • The Warriors took an early three-point lead to open the first set, but the Eagles answered with a 7-2 run to take a two-point advantage. Kills from Mercedes Pye and senior Jordan Weide (New Berlin, Wis.) gave WLC a 12-11 lead until Edgewood regained the lead with a three-point run. Wisconsin Lutheran evened the score at 17-17 to force a timeout but the Eagles took control and sat just one point away from claiming set one at 24-21. A kill from sophomore Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) sparked a five-point Warriors run to give the hosts a 26-24 comeback victory.
  • Trailing by two to start the second set, WLC scored four straight points behind kills from Weide and sophomore Jenna Charron (Appleton, Wis.). Wisconsin Lutheran never surrendered the lead for the remainder of the set, leading by at least three to claim set two, 25-20.
  • In the third set, the Warriors raced out to an 8-3 lead after forcing several Eagles errors. WLC then rattled off eight consecutive points, including four service aces by freshman Courtney Andras (Oxford, Mich.) to force an Edgewood timeout. Wisconsin Lutheran continued to extend the lead with kills from senior Alyssa Charron (Appleton, Wis.) and Weide to coast to a 25-12 win in set three.

  • Mercedes Pye paced the Warriors with eight kills on a .353 hitting percentage. Alyssa Charron added seven kills as WLC registered 28 kills as a team to go along with a .169 hitting percentage.
  • Sarles tallied a team-high nine digs and 15 assists. Mercedes Pye also recorded eight digs for Wisconsin Lutheran.
  • Sophomore Ally Goba (Mukwonago, Wis.) added eight digs and three service aces. The Warriors finished with seven service aces, with Andras leading the team with four.
  • WLC posted 10 block assists and one solo block. Sarles and Alyssa Charron tied for the team lead with three block assists.

  • Amanda Carlson finished with a team-high eight kills for the Eagles. Edgewood posted 31 kills as a team to go along with a .081 hitting percentage.
  • Sarah Uczen recorded nine digs and Taylor Salmon finished with 13 assists to lead the team.

  • The Warriors wrap up their abbreviated 2020-2021 campaign with the NACC North Tournament title. WLC won five straight matches to finish the season for a 9-2 overall record and 6-2 mark in the NACC.
