Warriors Blank Raiders, Advance To NACC Semifinal

NEW BERLIN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - The fourth-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team shutout fifth-seeded MSOE 5-0 in a NACC Tournament First Round match on Tuesday at the Princeton Club. The win was the Warriors' first in the NACC Tournament since the 2012-2013 season.

  • Final Score: No. 4 Wisconsin Lutheran 5, No. 5 MSOE 0
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (10-11, 5-3 NACC), MSOE (5-8, 4-4 NACC)
  • Location: Princeton Club, New Berlin, Wis.

  • The Warriors opened the match by winning all three doubles matches in closely contested fashion. At No. 1, freshmen Kaytlyn Hartfield (New Holstein, Wis.) and Katelynn Haskell (Santa Maria, Calif.) won 8-5. Freshmen Jena Smith (Lake Mills, Wis.) and Izzy Hawley (Allen Park, Mich.) were 8-4 winners at No. 2. Freshmen Gabrielle Medema (Appleton, Wis.) and Alex Sturm (Hartland, Wis.) completed the sweep at No. 3 with an 8-6 victory.
  • WLC picked up match-clinching wins at No. 1 and No. 5 to seal the win in singles play. Both Hartfield and Hawley picked up 6-2, 6-0 victories. Matches at No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 singles went unfinished.
  • Medema and Smith tied for the team lead with their 12th singles victories, while the doubles team of Medema and Sturm also won for the 12th time.

  • "It was a crazy day with early rain delays and windy conditions but the women did a great job staying focused. The doubles teams played extremely well with both No. 1 doubles and No. 3 doubles overcoming a three-game deficit to get extremely important wins. Overall, we're glad to make it past a tough MSOE team and onto the next round." - Head Coach Ryan Sallmann

  • After winning matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and No. 3 and No. 5 singles in its only meeting of the regular season, MSOE was held without a win on Tuesday.

  • The Warriors advance to Friday's NACC Tournament Semifinal where they will face top-seeded Edgewood (9-0, 8-0 NACC). First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Quann Park in Madison.
