Wheaton Stuns Women's Volleyball In Five Sets

WHEATON, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Wheaton on Friday night, but the host Thunder came back to win the final three sets over the Warriors in their first match of the Marilyn Scribner Invitational inside King Arena.

  • Final Score: Wheaton 3, Wisconsin Lutheran 2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-7)
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (2-7), Wheaton (6-5)
  • Location: King Arena, Wheaton, Ill.

  • The Warriors jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set, only to have the Thunder come back and take a 13-8 advantage. WLC went on a huge 15-2 scoring run to take control and win the opening game, 25-20.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran trailed only at 2-1 in the second set and held the lead for nearly the entire set. The Green and White pushed its lead to as much as six on three different occasions before holding off a late Wheaton rally for the 25-22 win.
  • The Warriors had an early three-point lead in the third set, but the Thunder took their first lead at 8-7 and never lost it. With the set tied at 16-16, Wheaton scored nine of the final 11 points for their first win of 25-18.
  • The Thunder trailed briefly by just one point early on in the fourth set. Leading 9-8, the hosts used an 8-1 scoring run to take command and even the match with a 25-19 win.
  • WLC grabbed a 4-1 lead in the fifth set, and with the contest knotted at 6-6, Wheaton closed the match with a 9-1 run for a 15-7 fifth set victory. The Thunder hit a match-high .320 in the final stanza.
  • Junior Jenna Charron (Appleton, Wis.) paced three players who recorded double-digit kills with 14. Juniors Rebecca Chavez (Chicago, Ill.) and Megan Riley (DeForest, Wis.) added 12 and 11 each.
  • Junior Emily Sarles (Lombard, Ill.) and freshman Karah Valerio (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded 27 and 23 kills apiece.
  • Junior Ally Goba (Mukwonago, Wis.) and freshman Kylee Gnabasik (Jefferson, Wis.) collected 25 and 10 digs. 

  • The Warriors play two more matches tomorrow at the Marilyn Scribner Invitational, facing Albion (7-3) and Carroll (1-8) at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. Live coverage links will be available for both contests at WLCSports.com.
