Women's Tennis Sweeps Alverno For First Win

NEW BERLIN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team split a pair of NACC-opening matches on Saturday at the Princeton Club. The Warriors dropped an 8-1 decision to Concordia Wisconsin in their morning match, before bouncing back for a 9-0 sweep over Alverno in their matinee contest.

  • Final Scores: Concordia Wisconsin 8, Wisconsin Lutheran 1; Wisconsin Lutheran 9, Alverno 0
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (1-2, 1-1 NACC), Concordia Wisconsin (3-0, 2-0 NACC), Alverno (0-2, 0-2 NACC)
  • Location: Princeton Club, New Berlin, Wis.

  • The Falcons opened the first match of the day winning all three doubles matches, despite the Warriors' No. 1 team of sophomores Jena Smith (Lake Mills, Wis.) and Kaytlyn Hartfield (New Holstein, Wis.) falling 8-7. CUW went on to win five of six singles matches from WLC.
  • Freshman Ali Schmidt (Germantown, Wis.) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles for Wisconsin Lutheran's lone win of the contest.
  • In the Warriors' afternoon bout with the Inferno, the hosts were victorious in all nine flights. Schmidt and sophomore Alex Sturm (Hartland, Wis.) were 8-0 winners at No. 3 doubles. Smith, sophomore Katelynn Haskell (Santa Maria, Calif.), sophomore Izzy Hawley (Allen Park, Mich.), Schmidt, and Sturm all claimed 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at their respective flights.
  • The win over the Inferno was the first conference win of the season for the Warriors and their seventh straight over their cross-town conference foe.

  • "We had mixed results today. We played great tennis in stretches against CUW but weren't steady enough to come away with a win. It was nice to be able to get our first conference win of the year against Alverno in the second match of the day." - Head Coach Ryan Sallmann

  • The Warriors cap off their busy first week of the season tomorrow with two non-conference matches in Stevens Point. WLC will play Marian (0-0) at 12 p.m. and the host Pointers (2-0) at 3 p.m.
