Warriors Split Sunday Matches In Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team concluded its busy opening week on Sunday with a pair of non-conference dual matches at UW-Stevens Point. The Warriors swept Marian 9-0 in their opening match before falling to the host Pointers 8-1 in their late afternoon contest.

  • Final Scores: Wisconsin Lutheran 9, Marian 0; UW-Stevens Point 8, Wisconsin Lutheran 1
  • Records: Wisconsin Lutheran (2-3), Marian (0-3), UW-Stevens Point (4-0)
  • Location: University Courts, Stevens Point, Wis.

  • The Warriors took an early lead over the Sabres behind doubles wins from sophomores Jena Smith (Lake Mills, Wis.) and Kaytlyn Hartfield (New Holstein, Wis.) at No. 1 (8-0) and Katelynn Haskell (Santa Maria, Calif.) and Izzy Hawley (Allen Park, Mich.) at No. 2 (8-3).
  • Smith, Haskell, Hartfield, Hawley, and freshman Ali Schmidt (Germantown, Wis.) collected straight set wins in singles action.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran added default wins over Marian at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
  • The Pointers posted an 8-1 win over the Warriors in the final match of the day.
  • Schmidt accounted for WLC's only win of the day, as she improved to 5-0 on the season in singles play following a 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 win at No. 5.

  • "It was nice to get a win over a traditionally tough team as Marian. Against UWSP, we played some nice points but couldn't string enough of them together to win points." - Head Coach Ryan Sallmann

  • The Warriors will have nearly a week off until they return to the courts next Saturday for a NACC dual match against Edgewood (0-3, 0-0 NACC). The match is set to start at 10 a.m. at Quann Park in Madison.
