WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College pushed its winning streak to three games following a 30-7 Senior Day win over Concordia Chicago on Saturday at Raabe Stadium.
The Warriors (4-4, 4-2 NACC) took the opening kickoff and drove 66 yards on just six plays before freshman
Nate Griffeth (Brighton, Colo.) connected with freshman
Javier Murillo (San Antonio, Texas) for an 11-yard touchdown and 7-0 lead.
The Cougars (2-6, 1-5 NACC) blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt on WLC's ensuing possession, but their drive stalled 10 plays later on a 49-yard missed field goal. On the next play, Griffeth hooked up with Murillo again for a 68-yard touchdown to give the hosts a 13-0 lead after the first quarter.
CUC turned over WLC on downs on its first possession of the second quarter and proceeded to drive 79 yards on 14 plays, culminating with a one-yard touchdown run.
Wisconsin Lutheran answered Concordia Chicago's lone score of the game on its next possession. Griffeth tossed his third touchdown of the opening half when he hooked up with junior
Carter Schneider (Jefferson, Wis.) from 15 yards away for a 20-7 lead with just 0:33 seconds left before halftime.
The Warriors turned the ball over twice out of their three third-quarter possessions, but the defense held strong allowing just 26 total yards on three Cougars' possessions in the third.
The lead reached 20 points midway through the fourth quarter when senior
Jalen Harris (Chicago, Ill.) scampered 18 yards to the end zone to complete a seven play, 67-yard drive. Sophomore
Arnulfo Ortega (Laredo, Texas) accounted for the final points of the game with a 34-yard field goal with 1:43 remaining.
Both teams ran 60 plays, but WLC out-gained CUC 428-189. Griffeth completed 18 of 26 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns. Murillo caught five passes for a season-high 118 yards and a pair of scores. Senior
Justin Parbs (Milwaukee, Wis.) surpassed the 100-yard mark on the ground for the fourth straight game, rushing 21 times for 104 yards.
Freshman
Layson Handwork (Merritt Island, Fla.) led Wisconsin Lutheran's defense with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss. Junior
Kyle Kubacki (St. Francis, Wis.) added seven stops and 1.5 sacks.
The Warriors play their final two games of the season on the road, starting next Saturday, November 5 with a 1 p.m. Luther Cup clash against Concordia Wisconsin (7-1, 5-1 NACC).
