Men's Volleyball Bounces Back For Saturday Split

WLC avenges RU loss with sweep over TIU

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College recovered from a frustrating 3-1 loss to Rockford by sweeping Trinity International 3-0 on Saturday in a non-conference triangular at the Seaver Center.

The Warriors (3-3) were defeated by the Regents (3-2) in their first match of the day by scores of 25-22, 18-25, 25-22, 25-17. WLC held leads of 15-8 in set three and 12-5 in set four, but let both slip away as RU came from behind for the win.

Wisconsin Lutheran hit .146 in the opening match with 31 kills, 17 errors, and 96 attempts. Freshman Martell Hines Jr. (Chicago Heights, Ill.) posted a team-high 12 kills for the Warriors. Sophomores Jay Thammavongsa and James Biedenbender (La Crosse, Wis.) tallied 16 and 10 assists, respectively. Freshman Marcus Fitzsimmons (Muskego, Wis.) and Trevor Salutric (Lockport, Ill.) collected eight digs apiece.

Isaiah Dixon recorded a match-high 13 kills for the Regents, who hit .197 in the match with 48 kills, 23 errors, and 127 attempts.

WLC bounced back in its second match of the day, sweeping the Trojans (0-2) by scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-12. Wisconsin Lutheran erased a one-point deficit in set two with a 10-1 scoring run, and rattled off 10 straight points in the third set for its second sweep of the season.

The Warriors hit a program-record .305 on 28 kills, 10 errors, and 59 attempts. Freshman Drew Wempner (West Allis, Wis.) had a match-high nine kills behind a .467 hitting percentage. Thammavongsa led all players in the match with 18 assists, while Salutric secured seven digs, also a match-high.

Matthew Perry posted six kills for TIU, which finished with a -.028 hitting percentage on 18 kills, 20 errors, and 71 attempts. 

WLC hosts a home-opening triangular next Sunday, February 5 at the Time of Grace Center. The Warriors will face UC Santa Cruz (7-0) at 12 p.m. and Lakeland (2-3) at 2 p.m. Live coverage links will be available for the contests at WLCSports.com.
