Warriors Reel In Muskies Behind Balanced Offense, Stingy Defense

Offense eclipses 400 yards while defense forces six turnovers

WAUWATOSA, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Senior Trevion Green (Miami, Fla.) rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns to lead Wisconsin Lutheran College to a 34-14 win over Lakeland on Faith and Family Day Saturday at Raabe Stadium.

The Warriors (2-4, 2-2 NACC), who collected their largest margin of victory over the Muskies (2-4, 1-3 NACC) in 17 all-time meetings, shutout their opponent in the fourth quarter for the second straight week.

WLC drove into LU territory on its first two possessions of the game, but was forced into a turnover on downs and punt. Lakeland later blocked a Wisconsin Lutheran punt and needed just four yards on three plays to take a 7-0 lead with 1:52 left in the opening quarter.

The Warriors knotted the score at 7-7 on their next possession when sophomore Bryce Barbian (Cudahy, Wis.) connected with freshman Emmitt Hawkins (Cudahy, Wis.) for a 50-yard touchdown to cap a 70-yard scoring drive, the team's longest of the game.

WLC forced a Muskies punt on the following possession which setup a short field. On 4th-and-1 from the LU 27-yard line, Green scampered to the end zone to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 14-7 lead. Lakeland found the end zone just four plays later, keyed by a 69-yard run, to tie the score at 14-14 at the 9:32 mark of the second quarter. Three possessions later, junior Arnulfo Ortega (Laredo, Texas) drilled a 34-yard field goal with 1:38 remaining before halftime for a 17-14 Warriors halftime advantage.

WLC extended its lead to 10 points on its second possession of the third quarter when Green rushed for a three-yard touchdown to cap a 10-play, 58-yard drive. The touchdown proved to be the only points from either team in the third quarter.

Green found the end zone for the third and final time with 4:11 left in the game. Following a 4th down sack from junior Savon Goodwin (New Orleans, La.), Wisconsin Lutheran took over on LU's 11-yard line, and Green ran it in from seven yards out three plays later. Ortega concluded the scoring with a 33-yard field goal with 0:33 seconds left for the final 34-14 score.

The Warriors outgained Lakeland 403-221. Barbian completed 21-of-42 passes for 233 yards and one touchdown. Green carried the ball 32 times for 149 yards and three scores, all career highs, while Hawkins had seven receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown.

Goodwin led all players on defense with 10 tackles, including five tackles for loss and two sacks. Senior Kyle Kubacki (Franklin, Wis.) and sophomore Donte Harris (Ringgold, Ga.) also added a sack apiece. Sophomores Layson Handwork (Merritt Island, Fla.) and Kason McFadden (Wylie, Texas) both recovered a fumble, while Handwork also intercepted a pass. Senior Chris Cooper (Milwaukee, Wis.) picked off a pair of passes, while junior Xavion Allen (Royse City, Texas) also had an interception.

WLC hits the road for its next two NACC games, starting next Saturday, October 14 at Eureka (4-1, 2-1 NACC). Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. with live coverage links available at WLCSports.com.
