MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Senior
Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) scored a game-high 23 points to become the 23rd member of Wisconsin Lutheran College's 1,000-point club in an 86-66 non-conference win over UW-Stevens Point on Tuesday at the Time of Grace Center.
The Warriors (3-1) not only defeated the Pointers (2-2) for the first time in eight all-time meetings, but also took down a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent for the first time since the 2008-2009 season.Â
Following four early lead changes during which UWSP led for just 0:36 seconds of game time, Stoltz put WLC ahead by eight at 21-13 following a jumper at the near midway mark of the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran's lead reached double-digits for the first time at 29-18 with 6:42 left in the opening stanza following another jumper from Stoltz. Stevens Point came within eight points with 5:21 remaining, but an 11-2 Warriors scoring run gave them a 40-23 lead at the 2:43 mark. WLC extended its lead to a first-half best 21 points near the break before heading into halftime in front 47-28. Stoltz and sophomores
Noah Howard (Waukesha, Wis.) and
Ben Lubbers (Delafield, Wis.) finished with nine points apiece in the first half.
Stoltz opened the second half by canning a three from the top of the key to hit 1,000 points for his career and open up a 22-point lead. An 11-1 run by the Pointers cut their deficit down to 12 points with 15:39 remaining. Wisconsin Lutheran maintained a double-digit lead until the 9:09 mark when UWSP came within nine points. That would be as close as the visitors would get, however, as the Warriors went on a 13-0 scoring run to take complete control with a game-high 23-point lead at 81-58 with 3:28 left. WLC's lead remained at least 20 points over the final three minutes of action.
Stoltz finished with 23 points to lead all scorers, while Howard poured in a career-high 16 points in just 13 minutes. Senior
AJ Vos (Lombard, Ill.) totaled eight rebounds and three blocks, both teams highs, in addition to his nine points. Senior
Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) added seven assists and six points. Wisconsin Lutheran shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the floor, including 52 percent (13-for-25) from three-point range, a season high.
Seth Miron scored 20 points to pace three UW-Stevens Point players in double figures. The Pointers shot 41.4 percent (24-for-58) from the field.Â
The Warriors next host Benedictine (3-1) on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. for their NACC opener. Live coverage links will be available at WLCSports.com.
