MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College came up short in a five-set Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference thriller against Lakeland on Wednesday at the Time of Grace Center.
The Warriors (4-15, 0-5 NACC), who suffered their second five-set setback of the season, fell to the Muskies (6-11, 1-4 NACC) by scores of 25-22, 14-25, 26-28, 25-21, 15-6.Â
WLC took a 12-10 lead in the first set, but a 7-1 run from LU gave them a lead they would never relinquish. Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to a 4-1 second set lead and never trailed en route to the 11-point set victory. In the third set, the Warriors overcame a four-point deficit, 10 ties, and five lead changes for a 28-26 triumph. Lakeland took the momentum back in the fourth set with a 25-21 win, holding off a late WLC rally. The Muskies led 6-2 in the fifth set and never gave up the lead.
Freshman
Drew Wempner (West Allis, Wis.) led Wisconsin Lutheran with a season-high 12 kills and four service aces. Sophomore
Jay Thammavongsa (Franklin, Wis.) collected a career-high 30 assists. Freshman
Connor Haeuser (West Bend, Wis.) also served up a season-best four aces. The Warriors hit .089 with 41 kills, 28 errors, and 146 total attempts.Â
Defensively, sophomore
James Biedenbender (La Crosse, Wis.) recorded a career-high 18 digs, while freshman
Trevor Salutric (Lockport, Ill.) added 16. Junior
Grant Wempner (Garden Grove, Calif.) tallied a career-high four total blocks.
Hunter Hensen had a match-high 19 kills to lead three players with double-digit kills for LU. Ben Busalacchi and Chase Anderson also posted double-doubles. Lakeland hit .253 in the match with 64 kills, 23 errors, and 162 attempts.Â
