DE PERE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College's
Ryan Dominick (Bartlett, Ill.) became the program's career hits leader as the Warriors split a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader with St. Norbert on Friday at Larry Van Alstine Field. The Green Knights took the opener 8-4 before WLC held on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Â
SNC (12-26, 6-16 NACC) used a five-run first inning to jump ahead of Wisconsin Lutheran in the opener. St. Norbert tallied a two-out single followed by a grand slam for the early advantage.
The score stood 5-0 until the fifth when the Warriors scored four runs all with two outs behind four hits. Junior
Henry Strupp (Watertown, Wis.) singled home freshman
Oliver Lopeztello (Chicago, Ill.), sophomore
Noah Zaccanti (Geneva, Ill.) added a RBI double, and Dominick followed with a two-run homer.
The Green Knights got a run back in the fifth on a fielder's choice RBI and made it a four-run game in the seventh on a two-run home run. WLC had a runner in scoring position in the sixth, seventh, and ninth, but was unable to generate any additional runs.
Dominick, who broke the career hits record in his first at-bat with a single down the left field line, finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Senior
Carter Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) also added two hits.
Neither team could generate much offense through the first five innings of game two, as the game remained scoreless.
The first three batters reached base for Wisconsin Lutheran in the sixth, but SNC fanned the next two hitters. Freshman
Eli Michaelis (Wauwatosa, Wis.) came through in the clutch with a two-RBI single that scored Zaccanti and Dominick for a 2-0 lead. The Warriors tacked on three more runs in the seventh behind a two-run single from Dominick and a two-out single from Raabe for the 5-0 advantage.
St. Norbert made things interesting in the ninth with a grand slam with nobody out. Sophomore
Jaime Miner (Erie, Ill.) was called upon in relief to retire two of the three batters he faced, stranding the tying run at third base.
Dominick once again led WLC at the plate by going 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs, and two walks. Zaccanti and Lopeztello also collected two hits each. Sophomore
Elijah Shevey (Muskego, Wis.) tossed five-and-two-thirds scoreless innings, his longest career outing, for his first career win on the mound. He allowed just two hits and struck out four. Miner recorded his first career save.
