Warriors Capitalize Off Turnovers To Tame Sabres

Twelve players score for WLC in ninth straight win

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Senior Sam Leisemann (Fall River, Wis.) scored a game-high 20 points and Wisconsin Lutheran College outscored Marian 30-2 in points off turnovers, as the Warriors won their ninth straight game on Saturday, 79-47, over the Sabres in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Sadoff Gymnasium.

WLC (14-4, 9-1 NACC), which held an opponent under 50 points for the ninth time this season, led from start to finish en route to its 29th straight win over MU in the all-time series.

Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out to a 6-0 lead less than two minutes into action. Marian came within two points at 10-8 before the Warriors scored seven straight to build a nine-point first-quarter lead. The Sabres scored a last-second bucket and trailed 17-10 after one period. Leisemann netted nearly half of her points in the game, eight, in the opening quarter.

WLC, which made 10 of its 15 shot attempts in the second quarter, tallied the first seven points of the period. A three-pointer from junior Ainsley Howard (Jefferson, Wis.) ended another 7-0 spurt and Wisconsin Lutheran led 31-12 with 4:43 remaining before halftime. The Warriors' lead grew to a first-half best 22 points at the break, 40-18, following a layup in the final 30 seconds from Leisemann, who scored 12 points in the quarter to account for her scoring in the game.

WLC used a 6-0 spurt early in the third quarter to lead by 27 points two-and-a-half minutes in. Another three from Howard extended the margin to 33 points at 59-26 with just over a minute left and Wisconsin Lutheran went into the final frame ahead 61-30. Freshman Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) scored 10 of her 12 points alone in the quarter.

The Warriors opened the fourth quarter on a 14-2 run, including a span of nine straight for a game-high 43-point lead with 4:24 left. MU closed out the game on a 15-4 run, but WLC still managed to outscore the hosts in the quarter, 18-17. Junior Haley Ott (Germantown, Wis.) had eight points in the fourth quarter.

Leisemann led all scorers with 20 points on 10-for-12 shooting and a game-high six rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. Stevens added 12 points, five rebounds, and a game-high four steals. Ott finished with 10 points and Howard recorded a career-high eight assists. Wisconsin Lutheran, which outscored MU 42-8 in the paint and 30-2 off turnovers, shot 48.6 percent (34-for-70) from the floor.

Kiara Williams scored 13 points off the bench for Marian, which shot 33.3 percent (13-for-39) for the game.
