SAN ANTONIO, Texas (WLCSports.com) - Graduate
Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) tied a season-high with 23 points and 17th-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College claimed the Leslie Robinson Holiday Classic title with a 79-70 win over 23rd-ranked Trinity on Saturday at Bell Center.
The Warriors (9-1), who matched up with a Top 25 opponent for the first time since January 11, 2020, held the Tigers to just 2-for-19 shooting from beyond the arc.
TU took its largest lead of the contest less than five minutes in when it held a 14-8 advantage. WLC responded with a 13-2 scoring run to grab its first lead of the game after graduate
Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) knocked down his second first-half triple. Trinity came within two points shortly after, but a 10-0 scoring run capped by a Stoltz three-pointer gave Wisconsin Lutheran its largest lead of the opening half, 40-25, with just over two minutes left. The Warriors took a 44-32 lead into halftime after outscoring the Tigers 17-2 in points off turnovers.
A 7-0 scoring run early in the second half brought TU's deficit down to just eight, but a 5-0 spurt sent WLC's lead back to double-digits where it stayed for the next 11 minutes. Wisconsin Lutheran's lead reached a game-high 16 points at 73-57 with 4:35 remaining after junior
Ja'Quell Chisom (Milwaukee, Wis.) completed a three-point play. Trinity whittled its deficit back into single digits twice within the final minute, but time ticked away and the Warriors left Texas with a 79-70 victory.
Stoltz led all scorers with a season-high tying 23 points. Chisom dropped in a career-high 19 points with six rebounds off the bench. Broeckel finished with 16 points, while graduate
Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) added 10 points, seven assists, and six rebounds. WLC shot 49.2 percent (29-for-59) from the floor, including 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from three-point range.
Christian Green scored 16 points to lead three players in double figures for the Tigers (6-2). TU shot 40 percent (24-for-60) from the floor, but was held to just 10.5 percent (2-for-19) from three-point range, and 62.5 percent (20-for-32) from the free throw line.
