Wisconsin Lutheran Falls To Benedictine In Season Finale

Drew Wempner hits .333 to lead Warriors in final match

LISLE, Ill. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College wrapped up its 2024 season on Saturday by dropping a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match to Benedictine 3-0 at the Dan and Ada Rice Center.

The Warriors (4-20, 1-11 NACC), who held early leads in all three sets, fell to the second-place Eagles (15-9, 10-2 NACC) by scores of 25-13, 25-20, 25-11. WLC hit -.014 (16 kills, 17 errors, 70 attempts), compared to BenU's .351 (37 kills, 10 errors, 77 attempts).

Wisconsin Lutheran held an 8-5 first-set lead over Benedictine, which then rattled off five straight points for a two-point edge. The Warriors trailed 15-11 before the Eagles used a 9-1 scoring run to pull away for the 25-13 opening-set win.

BenU broke a 6-6 deadlock, one of six second-set ties, with a 4-1 spurt to take the lead for good. Benedictine led by as many as six on three occasions before WLC cut its deficit to three at 20-17. The Eagles finished the set with five of the final eight points for the five-point victory.

Wisconsin Lutheran and BenU were knotted 4-4 in the third set before the hosts rattled off seven straight points to take command. The Warriors were unable to get any closer than six points as Benedictine cliched the match with a 25-11 score.

Sophomore Drew Wempner (West Allis, Wis.) tallied six kills and hit .333 to lead WLC. Junior Jay Thammavongsa (Franklin, Wis.) led the team with nine kills in addition to seven digs. Sophomore Trevor Salutric (Lockport, Ill.) collected a match-high eight digs.

Chase Olson hit .737 with 14 kills and six service aces to pace the Eagles, while Chandler Olson added 27 assists.
