WLC Stymied By Sabres In NACC Doubleheader

Warriors face Edgewood on Sunday in sweep-and-in scenario

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College was held to eight hits over two games of a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep to Marian on Friday by scores of 9-0 and 8-3 at Smith Field.

The Sabres (18-18, 10-12 NACC) struck for five two-out runs in the bottom of the first inning of game one to take control early. They added a single tally in the second and three more in the third to account for their nine runs over the run-rule shortened five-inning contest. The Warriors (11-27, 7-15 NACC) managed three baserunners, including a first-inning single from sophomore Emily Cardenas (Lake Stevens, Wash.).

WLC scored first in the second inning of game two on junior Allison Powers' (Sun Prairie, Wis.) two-out RBI single that scored freshman Alea Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis.). MU came back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second, but Wisconsin Lutheran answered again in the third. Senior Ashley Corley's (Plainfield, Ill.) triple scored sophomore Juliana Sieber (Oconto, Wis.). Corley scored on Madison Heller's (South Milwaukee, Wis.) sac bunt the next at-bat and the Warriors led 3-2. Marian knotted the score at 3-3 in the third with a solo homerun. Following two-and-a-half scoreless innings, the Sabres scored five runs, four unearned, on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to pull away for the win.

Corley went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI for the Warriors. Five other players posted one hit apiece.

WLC wraps up its regular season schedule on Sunday when it travels to Edgewood (18-20, 9-13 NACC) for a 10 a.m. NACC doubleheader. Wisconsin Lutheran can clinch the final NACC Tournament spot with a sweep of the Eagles. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
