MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College opened its 2024 season on Thursday with a 5-2 setback to two-time defending Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference champion Concordia Wisconsin at CUW Tennis Courts.
The Warriors (0-1, 0-1 NACC) dropped two tightly-contested doubles matches to the Falcons (1-1, 1-0 NACC), who picked up the doubles point. Freshmen
Joelle Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Amelia Kelley (Appleton, Wis.) collected a 6-3 victory over CUW's Abby Schwartz and Payton Steward at No. 2 for their first career doubles win. Senior
Ali Schmidt (Germantown, Wis.) and sophomore
Maddy Olson (Onalaska, Wis.) dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 1, while freshman
Tai Mitchell (Elm Grove, Wis.) and junior
Desirae Pugh (Ixonia, Wis.) came up short 6-3 at No. 3.
Olson claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Morgan Chyla, while Smith took home a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Steward at No. 3. Schmidt suffered a tough three-set setback, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 1.Â
Wisconsin Lutheran hosts Elmhurst (0-1) on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Hart Park in its home opener. It marks the first-ever meeting between the Warriors and Bluejays.
