AJ Vos (Lombard, Ill.) led five players in double figures with a season-high tying 17 points as No. 7 Wisconsin Lutheran College came away with a 79-66 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference road win over Marian on Wednesday at Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Warriors (15-1, 8-1 NACC), who outscored the Sabres 13-3 off turnovers and 11-0 on fast breaks, had five players reach double-figure scoring for the second straight game and fourth time this season.
WLC trailed 4-2 a minute-and-a-half into the contest before a 13-3 run gave them an eight-point lead at the 13:21 mark of the first half. Graduate
Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.) hit back-to-back three-pointers and junior
Ja'Quell Chisom (Milwaukee, Wis.) converted a three-point play over the course of the run. Another three from Chisom gave Wisconsin Lutheran its first of four separate nine-point first half leads at 18-9. Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) and a layup from Chisom pushed the advantage back to nine points. The Warriors led by nine with less than 0:30 seconds left before halftime, before Marian hit a buzzer-beating triple for a 35-29 score at intermission.
After back-and-forth scoring for the first few minutes of the second half, Vos put WLC in front by 13 with a three-pointer at the 15:13 mark. The Sabres slowly chipped away at their double-digit deficit, coming as close as four points at 57-53 with 10:40 to play. Five straight points from graduate
Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) brought the lead back to nine. Wisconsin Lutheran's lead hovered between six and eight points for the next seven minutes before a Hefle triple had the Warriors in front 73-62 with 2:15 remaining. WLC closed out the contest at the charity stripe, making 6 of 7 attempts in the final minute.
Vos tied a season-high with 17 points to pace five players in double figures. He also added seven rebounds. Broeckel recorded his fifth double-double of the year with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Graduate
Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) filled the box score with 14 points, a season-high eight assists, six rebounds, and a season-high three steals. Hefle added 11 points and six rebounds, while Chisom chipped in 10 points and four rebounds. Wisconsin Lutheran shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the field and 84.2 percent (16-for-19) from the charity stripe.
Brandon Adorno scored a game-high 18 points and Alex Vassilakis added a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds for MU (13-4, 6-4 NACC). Marian finished the game shooting 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the floor.
