WHEATON, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped a 3-0 non-conference decision to Wheaton (IL) on Tuesday at King Arena. The Warriors (7-11) fell by set scores of 25-17, 25-14, and 25-8 to the Thunder (17-4).
The Thunder opened the first set with a 4-0 lead and used a late 4-0 scoring run to pull away for the 25-17 win. The Warriors tied the set at 8-8 after a kill from senior
Emily Marohn (Reedsville, Wis.), but Wheaton answered with a 5-1 stretch to regain control.
In the second set, the Thunder raced out to a 10-1 advantage behind six straight points to start the frame, including three service aces from Miriam Pozdol-Niego. WLC trimmed the deficit to 14-10 behind a short run that included a kill from junior
Faith Smith (Racine, Wis.) and an ace from sophomore
Willa Hollander (St. Louis, Mo.), but Wheaton closed on a 10-3 spurt to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The hosts carried the momentum into the third set, building an early 10-3 margin and later stringing together a 12-0 run to seal the sweep with a 25-8 victory.
Smith and senior
Lydia Biggin (Burlington, Wis.) led Wisconsin Lutheran with four kills. Freshman
Lauren Charbonneau (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) tallied six assists, and senior
Kayla Wigley (Milwaukee, Wis.) paced the team with eight digs.
The Thunder hit .277 as a team, led by Jordan Benford and Ashton Major's seven kills. Reese Donahoe dished out a match-high 17 assists, and Pozdol-Niego collected 12 digs.
