Warriors' Winning Streak Halted By Hot-Shooting MSOE

Defense yields season-high 91 points to Raiders

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Seventh-ranked Wisconsin Lutheran College saw its 13-game winning streak snapped by Milwaukee School of Engineering, 91-83, on Wednesday in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game at Hotchkin Arena.

The Warriors (20-2, 13-2 NACC), who were held to their second-lowest shooting percentage (37.5) of the season, allowed an opponent to score over 90 points for the first time this year.

WLC jumped out to an 11-5 lead over the Raiders just three minutes in following three-pointers from senior AJ Vos and graduates Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) and Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.). Graduate Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.) knocked down his first of five triples in the game for a 19-16 Wisconsin Lutheran lead with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. MSOE responded with a 7-0 scoring run to take its first lead of the game and force a Warriors timeout with 10 minutes left. WLC fell behind 30-23 but cut its deficit to just two points at 35-33 at the four-minute mark following a free throw from Goetz. Milwaukee School of Engineering extended its lead back to 10 points in the closing seconds of the opening half before a free throw from graduate Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) made the score 46-37 at halftime.

The Raiders opened up a 16-point lead just over two minutes into the second half, and shortly after used a 7-0 run to take a game-high 21-point advantage at 64-43 with 15:03 remaining. Wisconsin Lutheran chipped away and trailed by 14 points five minutes later, before getting within single digits at 70-61 following a Hefle three-pointer with 7:40 left. MSOE twice extended its lead back to 13 points and managed to maintain an 11-point advantage with just 1:11 left. Stoltz responded with a personal 5-0 scoring spurt to get within six, but Milwaukee School of Engineering went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe over the final two minutes to seal the upset.

Broeckel finished with 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Warriors. Stoltz added 19 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Hefle and Vos tallied 17 and 10 points, respectively. WLC, which outscored the Raiders 20-6 in points off turnovers, shot 37.5 percent (27-for-72) from the floor. Wisconsin Lutheran attempted a season-high 40 three-pointers, while making at least 10 from long range for the seventh time this season.

Mason Dopirak scored a game-high 26 points to pace three players in double figures for MSOE (15-7, 11-4 NACC), which shot an even 50 percent (30-for-60) for the game.

The Warriors remain on the road on Saturday for a 1 p.m. NACC matchup in Madison against Edgewood (4-19, 3-13 NACC). Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
