Wisconsin Lutheran Holds Off Dominican At Home, 93-90

Broeckel's sixth double-double paces five Warriors in double figures

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) - Graduate Ryan Broeckel (Chilton, Wis.) recorded his sixth double-double of the season to lead five players in double figures as No. 8 Wisconsin Lutheran College held off Dominican, 93-90, on Wednesday at Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (19-1, 12-1 NACC), who shot over 56 percent in the second half, extended their home court winning streak to 25 games.

The Stars notched the first basket of the game, but a 5-0 WLC spurt gave them an early 5-2 lead with 17:41 remaining in the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead with a 8-1 run behind triples from graduate Grayson Goetz (Aurora, Ill.) and senior AJ Vos (Lombard, Ill.), before DU responded with a 6-0 run of its own, resulting in a 13-11 Warriors advantage with 12:34 to play. WLC used a 6-0 spurt over the next three minutes to take a 19-11 lead at the nine-minute mark of the half. After some back-and-forth action, a 7-0 run by Wisconsin Lutheran, led by five points from Broeckel gave the hosts their first double-digit lead of the game, 27-16, with six minutes remaining until halftime. Dominican used a 9-0 run to pull within a point with 1:30 left, but WLC closed the half with a 7-2 spurt, sparked by four points from Vos, to take a 42-36 lead into the locker room. Broeckel scored 14 first-half points to lead all scorers.

Both teams exchanged buckets to begin the second half, but Wisconsin Lutheran used an 8-0 run, including six points from Broeckel to build a double-digit advantage at 57-46 near the 12-minute mark. The Warriors matched their largest lead of 12 points twice throughout the eight-minute mark, before Dominican chipped away at its deficit, bringing it down to just three points at 74-71 with 4:40 remaining. The Stars capped a 6-0 spurt to take their first lead, 75-74, since the opening minutes before a three-point play from graduate Jacob Stoltz (Kewaskum, Wis.) put WLC back in front 77-75 with three minutes to go. DU tied the contest one last time at 77-77, but a Vos layup put Wisconsin Lutheran back in front by two. The Warriors never relinquished their lead down the stretch, scoring their final seven points from the charity stripe. Dominican had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but a three-quarter court shot fell short.

Broeckel finished with a game-high double-double of 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead five players in double figures. Stoltz added 17 points and four assists. Goetz and graduate Jacob Hefle (Germantown, Wis.) finished with 13 points apiece. Vos chipped in 12 points and six rebounds. WLC shot 47.7 percent (31-for-65) from the floor and 77.1 percent (27-for-35) from the free throw line.
