Softball Salvages Wednesday Split At Space Coast Spring Games

Warriors score seven unanswered runs against Webster

MELBOURNE, Fla. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College earned a non-conference split after scoring seven unanswered runs to take a 10-3 victory over Webster in game two of the Space Coast Spring Games on Wednesday. The Warriors dropped the opening game of the day, 7-0, to undefeated Marietta at USSSA Space Coast Complex.

GAME 1
The Warriors threatened to crack the scoreboard in the second inning after a leadoff double from freshman Kylie Gaston (Albertville, Minn.), but the Pioneers escaped the jam with a pair of strikeouts. MC broke the scoreless game with a pair of runs in the third and a single tally in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Marietta broke the game open with three runs on a pair of hits to lead 6-0 through five innings. The Pioneers added a two-out insurance run in their half of the sixth before closing out the game, 7-0.

WLC was held to just four hits in the contest, led by Gaston's 2-for-3 performance. Sophomore Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.) and senior Olivia Krieser (Stoughton, Wis.) collected the other hits for Wisconsin Lutheran. Junio Emily Brands (Zeeland, Mich.) took the loss in the decision, allowing three runs in 3.0 innings.

Camryn Kiefer collected 12 strikeouts in a complete game shutout for MC (6-0) as she stranded just four hits over 7.0 innings. Becca Streets paced the offense with three RBI in a 3-for-4 game.

GAME 2
The Gorloks scored two-out runs in the first and third inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After the first two Warriors were retired in their half of the third, senior Gwen Malecke (Gilberts, Ill.) got the rally started with a single up the middle before coming around to score on a WU error. Gaston evened the score with a RBI single before sophomore Julianna Alloy (Harrison Township, Mich.) put WLC ahead 3-2 with a two-run double.

Webster knotted the game at 3-3 in the fourth on a two-out single. Alloy delivered once again in the fifth, this time plating Anhalt to put the Wisconsin Lutheran ahead, 4-3. The Gorloks threatened in the sixth with runners on first and second with no outs, but freshman Teagan Piven (Plainfield, Ill.) escaped the frame with the lead intact. The Warriors had the first five runners reach base in their half of the sixth and broke the game open with six insurance runs on six hits. Malecke and Anhalt recorded RBIs before the first out was recorded, while Alloy and senior Allison Powers (Sun Prairie, Wis.) added run-scoring hits of their own to push the WLC's lead to 10-3.

Wisconsin Lutheran was led by a 3-for-4 performance with five RBI and a run scored from Alloy. Malecke, Gaston, and freshman Maritza Martinez (Kenosha, Wis.) added two hits apiece. Freshman Kieghtan Rank (Madison, Wis.) allowed three earned runs on eight hits without a walk to earn the win in 5.0 innings. Piven picked up her first save of the season with 2.0 scoreless innings in relief.

For Webster (1-7), Aven Rgwar-Hayes went 2-for-4 with a solo homerun in the matchup. Ainsley Hinz took the loss in 4.1 innings and a pair of earned runs for the Gorloks.
