WATERTOWN, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - Wisconsin Lutheran College completed the non-conference season sweep of Maranatha Baptist on Thursday with a 3-0 win at Maranatha Gymnasium.
The Warriors (8-11) defeated the Sabercats in three sets for the second time this season by scores of 25-12, 25-18, 25-17.
WLC, which never trailed in the opening set, scored the first three points and held a 10-3 lead over MBU. Wisconsin Lutheran's lead reached double digits for the first time at 17-7 following a kill from freshman
Carson Rau (Jackson, Wis.). The Warriors' advantage never dipped below nine points as they took the first set 25-12.
WLC fought off a pair of early ties to take a 9-4 lead in the second set. Maranatha Baptist closed to within a point at 12-11, before an 8-2 run gave Wisconsin Lutheran a seven-point advantage at 20-13. The Sabercats later came within four, but the Warriors matched their largest lead of the set with a 25-18 victory.
WLC scored the first four points of the third set and held a commanding 16-7 lead. MBU answered with five straight points to bring its deficit down to four before four in a row from Wisconsin Lutheran pushed the lead back to eight. The Warriors closed out the win with a 25-17 triumph.
Sophomore
Sean Kane (Tinley Park, Ill.) collected a match- and season-high 14 kills for WLC. Freshman
Ray Dryier (Lockport, Ill.) hit .438 with a season-high eight kills and a match- and season-high 11 digs. Senior
Jay Thammavongsa (Franklin, Wis.) led all players with 26 assists in addition to nine digs. Rau recorded a season-high three service aces. Wisconsin Lutheran hit .224 with 34 kills, 15 errors, and 85 attempts.Â
Isaiah Johnson tallied a team-high eight kills for Marantha Baptist (0-18), which hit -.013 with 15 kills, 16 errors, and 76 attempts.
