Warriors Swept By Falcons In Road Finale

Piven combines for 4.0 innings of scoreless relief

MEQUON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped a pair of Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference games to Concordia Wisconsin, 8-0 and 5-3, on Sunday at Catalyst Park.

GAME 1
The Warriors' best chance to score came early when senior Olivia Krieser (Stoughton, Wis.) doubled to left field to lead off the game, but the Falcons worked out of the jam unscathed. WLC, which was held to three hits in the opener, also had two runners on with nobody out in the second, but was unable to drive home a run.

CUW got on the board immediately with a solo homerun in the first inning, then broke the game open in the third with a two-run homer, extending the lead to 3-0. Concordia Wisconsin tacked on three runs on three hits in the fourth, and a two-run single in the sixth led to the eight-run margin.

At the plate, Krieser, freshman Kylie Gaston (Albertville, Minn.), and sophomore Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.) each recorded hits for Wisconsin Lutheran. Freshman Teagan Piven (Plainfield, Ill.) provided a steady outing in relief, tossing 1.2 innings without allowing a run.

Megan Bloyer was one of four players to record two hits for the Falcons, while also driving in four runs and scoring once. Jasmine Freeze struck out four in a complete-game shutout effort.

GAME 2
A second straight leadoff homerun put CUW in front 1-0, but the Warriors knotted the score in the top of the second when senior Allison Powers' (Sun Prairie, Wis.) sacrifice fly scored sophomore Alea Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis.).

Concordia Wisconsin went ahead 3-1 in the third with a two-out, two-run double, and plated two more two-out runs in the fourth to open a four-run lead.

In the sixth, WLC sent seven batters to the plate, scoring twice on Anhalt's third homerun of the season that scored freshman Natalie Jordan (Cincinnati, Ohio) to bring Wisconsin Lutheran within striking distance. The Warriors then loaded the bases with two down, but a strikeout ended another scoring threat.

Krull and Gaston came through with back-to-back one-out singles in the seventh, but the Falcons retired the next two WLC hitters to strand the tying run on base.

Anhalt finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Powers was 2-for-2 with a RBI. Piven tossed another 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

For CUW (25-9, 16-4 NACC), Jess Pozezinski and Jenna Shadoski each went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run. Emma Shellstrom gave up one run in 5.0 innings to record the win, while Kylie Van de Loo collected the save.

Wisconsin Lutheran (9-25, 4-16 NACC) hosts Marian (18-16, 13-7 NACC) on Friday for a 3 p.m. NACC doubleheader at Neumann Family Softball Field. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
