WLC Edged By MSOE In Pair Of One-Run Contests

Martinez and Krieser collect four hits each for Warriors

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College suffered a pair of one-run setbacks to Milwaukee School of Engineering by scores of 7-6 and 8-7 on Sunday in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader at MSOE Raiders Field.

GAME 1
The Warriors struck first in the second inning of the opener, with seniors Gwen Malecke (Gilberts, Ill.) and Allison Powers (Sun Prairie, Wis.) setting the table with singles before senior Olivia Krieser (Stoughton, Wis.) delivered a clutch two-out, two-RBI single to give WLC a 2–0 lead.

After the Raiders surged ahead with five runs in the third—including a grand slam—Wisconsin Lutheran immediately responded in the bottom half. Sophomores Madison Heller (South Milwaukee, Wis.) and Alea Anhalt (Fond du Lac, Wis.) combined to cut the deficit to 5–3 with leadoff hits in the frame, with Anhalt driving in Heller with a double.

Trailing 6-3, the Warriors scored in each of the next two innings. In the fourth, Krieser singled again to drive in another run, and Powers later crossed the plate on a double-play popout. After MSOE got a run back in the fifth, a RBI groundout from Malecke made it 7-6 after five. The teams went scoreless over the final two innings as the final score remained 7-6.

Krieser finished 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Heller and Powers added two hits each. Heller also scored twice. Junior Emily Brands (Zeeland, Mich.) allowed just one earned run in 4.2 relief innings in the circle.

Jayda Nelson was one of four players to post two hits for Milwaukee School of Engineering. She added two RBI. Alyssa Jacobsen drove in four runs. Katie Pollock pitched a complete game, allowing six runs with five strikeouts.

GAME 2
WLC matched the Raiders' two first-inning runs with a RBI double from sophomore Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.) and a RBI single from freshman Maritza Martinez (Kenosha, Wis.). Trailing 4-2 entering the last of the third, Wisconsin Lutheran strung together six hits for a five-run frame and 7-4 advantage. A RBI double from Malecke, a RBI single from Krieser, and a two-RBI single from Anhalt highlighted the Warriors' biggest inning of the day.

MSOE clawed back with consecutive solo homeruns in the fifth to come within a run. In the seventh, back-to-back two-out RBI hits gave Milwaukee School of Engineering the final 8–7 advantage.

WLC had a chance to respond in the bottom of the seventh, placing runners on second and third with one out. However, a sharp grounder turned into a game-ending double-play.

Maritza Martinez led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a RBI. Krull finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a RBI, while Anhalt also chipped in two RBI.

Carlee Emery went 4-for-4 with a homerun, three RBI, and a run scored for the Raiders (8-12, 4-0 NACC). Wisconsin Lutheran managed just two hits over the final four innings against MSOE reliever Marissa Collazo, who shut the door with 4.0 scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Warriors (6-15, 1-7 NACC) next visit Alverno (1-16, 0-6 NACC) on Saturday, April 12 for a 12 p.m. NACC doubleheader. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
