RIVER FOREST, Ill. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College battled back from a double-digit second-half deficit but came up just short in an 82-80 overtime Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference loss to Dominican on Saturday at Igini Sports Forum.
The Warriors (6-17, 4-12 NACC) shot 42.4 percent (28-of-66) from the field and 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from three-point range, while the Stars (2-21, 2-14 NACC) finished at 38.5 percent (25-of-65) overall and 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from beyond the arc.
WLC trailed 34-31 at halftime after a tightly contested opening 20 minutes that featured four ties and three lead changes. DU built its largest lead of the first half at 17-8, before Wisconsin Lutheran rattled off a 14-0 scoring run to take a 22-17 lead with seven minutes to play. A three-pointer from sophomore
Trey Raabe (Mukwonago, Wis.) had the Warriors still leading 29-26 with three minutes remaining. Dominican answered with eight straight points and went into halftime in front by three.
The Stars used a 10-0 scoring run five minutes into the second half to help extend their lead to a game-high 12 points at 48-36. The hosts still held an 11-point advantage at 62-51 with six minutes left before the visitors began to slowly chip away. Trailing 68-59 with 1:58 on the clock, WLC closed out regulation on a 10-1 run, including four points from freshman
Riley Mueller (Hortonville, Wis.) in the final 0:33 seconds to send the game to overtime knotted at 69-69.
Sophomore
Sam Hans (Hartland, Wis.) gave Wisconsin Lutheran its first and only lead of the extra session at 73-71 with a jumper at the 3:34 mark. DU netted the next five points and never relinquished the lead. The Warriors came within a point at 76-75, but Dominican went 6-for-8 from the free throw line over the final 1:41 to hold on for the win.
Senior
Ja'Quell Chisom (Milwaukee, Wis.) led WLC with 19 points, while freshman
Bryce Appel (Edgerton, Wis.) added 16, freshman
Isaiah Mellock (Greendale, Wis.) chipped in 12, and Mueller finished with 10. Chisom and Mellock paced the team on the glass with nine rebounds each, and Mellock handed out three assists.
The Stars were led by Braydon Murphy with 21 points, while Frank Paszkowski and Adrian Pelszynski each scored 20. Dominic Crapia added 12 points. Paszkowski also led DU with seven rebounds.
