Freshmen Fuel Warriors To Seventh Straight Win

Frey, Ratzow, and Leffel score in double figures for WLC

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College rolled to a 92-41 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference victory over Concordia Chicago on Saturday at Time of Grace Center, posting season highs in points, field goals made, and rebounds in the wire-to-wire win.

The Warriors (16-5, 13-1 NACC) jumped out quickly in the opening quarter, shooting 50 percent from the floor to build a 21-10 lead after one. WLC opened the game on an 11-2 run and never looked back, led by freshman Kenly Frey's (Brookfield, Wis.) nine points.

The second quarter turned the game decisively into Wisconsin Lutheran's favor. The Warriors scored the first 22 points of the period, holding the Cougars scoreless for nearly six-and-a-half minutes, highlighted by a 25-2 scoring run that stretched the margin to as many as 34. Frey and fellow freshman Madeline Leffel (Germantown, Wis.) scored eight points each, and WLC went into halftime with a commanding 49-17 advantage after shooting a game-high 66.7 percent.

Wisconsin Lutheran kept its foot on the gas in the third quarter, shooting 55.6 percent and outscoring CUC 27-19. The Warriors pushed their lead to 40 points more than midway through and put the game out of reach heading into the final period.

WLC held Concordia Chicago to just one made field goal and 5.9 percent shooting in the fourth quarter. Eleven players saw court time in the final 10 minutes as Wisconsin Lutheran coasted to the 51-point win.

The Warriors finished the game shooting 51.4 percent (36-for-70) from the field. Frey led the way with 24 points, while freshman Maddie Ratzow (Oconomowoc, Wis.) added 17 and Leffel chipped in 10 to give WLC three double-figure scorers. Senior Jayden Hill (Kenosha, Wis.) paced Wisconsin Lutheran on the boards with a game-high 12 rebounds, Hill and junior Margie Stevens (Oneida, Wis.) dished out a game-high four assists, and Frey led the Warriors with two steals.

WLC held decisive advantages in rebounds (68-25), points in the paint (48-12), second-chance points (28-7), and bench points (50-20).

The Cougars (8-13, 6-7 NACC) shot 22.2 percent (14-for-63) from the field for the game. Naveya Jackson scored 11 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead CUC.

Wisconsin Lutheran will be back in action on Wednesday, February 11, when it travels to Marian (2-19, 2-12 NACC) for a 7 p.m. conference matchup. Live coverage links can be found at WLCSports.com.
