Fredrick Fuels Wisconsin Lutheran To Season’s First Win

Junior throws seven innings and fans seven

FORT MYERS, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College earned its first win of the season with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Geneva on Monday at Terry Park during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Warriors (1-5) scored in three different innings and received a strong outing on the mound from junior Cody Fredrick (Oconomowoc, Wis.) to secure the win.

WLC took the lead in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Jacob Lorbecki (Richfield, Wis.) doubled down the right-field line to begin the rally before junior Ian Rintelman (Muskego, Wis.) followed with an RBI single to right-center to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 1-0 advantage.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning when the Warriors added to their lead. Rintelman doubled to start the frame and later scored on sophomore Connor Zorn's (Huntley, Ill.) sacrifice fly to center field, pushing the lead to 2-0.

The Golden Tornadoes (3-2) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth with a single and a fielder's choice that included a throwing error, allowing a run to come home unearned.

WLC added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Junior Aiden Montgomery (St. Louis, Mo.) reached on an error, stole second, and later scored on senior Oliver Lopeztello's (Chicago, Ill.) RBI single to right field to make it 3-1.

Freshman Jacob Bickel (Appleton, Wis.) worked a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts before Rintelman struck out two in the ninth to record the save.

Fredrick delivered a standout performance on the mound, tying a career high by pitching seven innings while striking out a career-best seven batters. He allowed just five hits and one unearned run to earn the win.

Rintelman led Wisconsin Lutheran offensively with two hits and an RBI, while freshman Lincoln Thede (Appleton, Wis.) also recorded two hits. Lopeztello and Zorn each drove in a run.

Marco Chenet paced Geneva with two hits.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader against Valley Forge at Terry Park beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
