MELBOURNE, Fla. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College dropped both ends of a split doubleheader to a pair of undefeated teams, Muskingum, 4-0, and Cornell College, 10-2 in five innings, on Monday at the Space Coast Spring Games at USSSA Space Coast Complex.
Muskingum 4, Wisconsin Lutheran 0
The Fighting Muskies took an early lead in the opener, scoring a pair of runs in each of the first two innings to lead 4-0 after two.
Sophomore
Brianna Wascher (South Elgin, Ill.) kept the Warriors in the game as she retired 11 straight MU batters over the middle innings. With Muskingum threatening with a runner in scoring position and just one out in the sixth inning, sophomore
Teagan Piven (Plainfield, Wis.) escaped the jam with an infield popout and a swinging strikeout to keep the game at 4-0.
WLC's best opportunity came in the bottom half of the sixth when sophomore
Daylanna Morgese (Milwaukee, Wis.) and junior
Madison Heller (South Milwaukee, Wis.) each reached base on a single, but the Fighting Muskies retired the next three Wisconsin Lutheran hitters to keep the shutout intact.
The Warriors tallied three hits in the contest with Morgese, Heller, and sophomore
Maritza Martinez (Kenosha, Wis.) each recording one. Piven pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Dani Wright completed 5.0 perfect innings to earn the win for MU (6-0), while Makenna Crothers completed the shutout with 2.0 scoreless innings. Elizabeth Wauford paced Muskingum offensively with a 2-for-3 performance while knocking in two runs.
Cornell College 10, Wisconsin Lutheran 2 (5 inn.)
WLC wasted no time cracking the scoreboard when junior
Sommer Krull (New London, Wis.) and Martinez collected back-to-back singles in the opening frame. Both runners came around to score on a Rams' throwing error, giving Wisconsin Lutheran a 2-0 lead. CC cut the deficit in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
Cornell took the lead in the second inning on a two-run, two-out single up the middle before adding a single tally in the next inning to extend its lead to 4-2 through three frames. The Warriors threatened in the fourth with runners on the corners, but a groundout kept the deficit at 4-2.
The Rams broke the game open in the fourth inning, exploding for six runs on eight hits to push their lead to 10-2 before closing the game out in the next half inning.
Krull and freshman
Anna Bracke (Brookfield, Wis.) each went 2-for-3 to lead WLC. Martinez and sophomore
Raquel Shields (Itasca, Ill.) each recorded a hit.
CC (6-0) had three different players, Alexa Corona, Peyton Souhrada, and Elise Oleson, go 2-for-3 with two RBI in the contest. Lexi Ellermeier improved to 3-0 in the circle after finishing 4.0 innings and allowing two runs, none earned, with no walks allowed.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-4) returns to action on Tuesday at the Space Coast Spring Games with a doubleheader against Franciscan (1-3) and Baldwin Wallace (2-0) at 12:15 p.m. ET and 4:45 p.m. ET, respectively, at the USSSA Space Coast Complex.
