Women’s Volleyball Stunned By Luther In Season Opener

Norse erase 2-0 deficit to pull off reverse sweep over Warriors

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College took a commanding 2-0 lead over Luther, but the Norse came back to stun the Warriors 3-2 on Tuesday in the non-conference season opener at Time of Grace Center.

The Warriors (0-1) jumped out to an early lead in the opening set and never looked back, building a 18-9 advantage before closing out a 25-16 victory. Freshman Elizabeth Ehlke (Cedarburg, Wis.) led WLC with three kills and four service aces in the opening set.

Wisconsin Lutheran continued its strong play in the second set, racing to an early advantage and maintaining control throughout. Ehlke added seven kills in the frame as the Warriors hit .424 as a team, cruising to a 25-18 win and taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Norse responded in the third set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. WLC came back to take its lone lead at 18-17, but a 5-1 spurt propelled LC to a 25-21 advantage, cutting Wisconsin Lutheran's advantage to 2-1.

The fourth set featured a back-and-forth battle with 10 ties and five lead changes from start to finish. The teams were tied at 11-11 before Luther grabbed a narrow advantage. The Warriors continued to fight and pulled even at 20-20, but the Norse scored four of the final five points to win 25-23 and force a fifth set.

WLC opened the decisive fifth set with a 4-1 lead and remained in front 10-5 after a service ace from freshman Brenna Valerio (Pewaukee, Wis.). LC then mounted a comeback, eventually tying the set at 11-11 before scoring four of the final five points to claim a 15-12 victory and the match.

Ehlke led all players with 14 kills and five service aces in her collegiate debut. Junior Isabel Baudhuin (Casco, Wis.) added nine kills, while junior Hannah Rood (Burnsville, Minn.) posted a double-double with 25 assists and 11 digs. Sophomore Lauren Charbonneau (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) contributed 13 assists, and sophomore Brooke Bartelt (West Bend, Wis.) led Wisconsin Lutheran with 14 digs. Freshman Alyssa Koval (Winneconne, Wis.) added 13 digs.

Ruby Gerhard (11 kills, 13 digs) and Lindsay Hanson (10 kills, 14 digs) each posted double-doubles for Luther. Iris Elias led all players with 31 assists.

The Warriors finished the night with a .111 hitting percentage, edging LC's .098 mark. WLC also held a 16-8 advantage in service aces.

Wisconsin Lutheran travels to Winona, Minnesota, this weekend for three matches at the Sugar Loaf Classic, hosted by Saint Mary's. The Warriors open tournament play Friday at 7 p.m. against UW-Superior (0-0).
