WINONA, Minn. (WLCSports.com) – Wisconsin Lutheran College split a pair of matches on Saturday at the Sugar Loaf Classic, falling to Minnesota-Morris in straight sets before bouncing back with a four-set victory over host Saint Mary's.

In the opening match of the day, the Warriors (1-2) struggled to find their rhythm offensively, hitting .119 as a team in a 25-17, 25-21, 25-23 loss to the Cougars (2-1). UMM countered with a .173 hitting percentage to secure the sweep.

Freshman Ireland Zyzo (Waukesha, Wis.) led the WLC attack with 12 kills and 11 digs, while senior Faith Smith (Racine, Wis.) added nine kills on an efficient .615 hitting clip. Junior Hannah Rood (Burnsville, Minn.) and freshman Lydia Neeb (Oostburg, Wis.) split setting duties, recording 17 and 13 assists, respectively. Sophomore Brooke Bartelt (West Bend, Wis.) contributed three service aces.

For Minnesota-Morris, Ella Johnson paced the offense with 11 kills, and Sella Fleming tallied 22 assists. Braxtyn Meyer recorded four service aces, while Rachel Bopp led the defense with 12 digs.

Wisconsin Lutheran rebounded in the nightcap, overcoming a first-set loss to defeat Saint Mary's 17-25, 25-15, 31-29, 28-26. The Warriors hit .144 for the match, while the Cardinals (2-2) finished at .116.

Zyzo turned in a dominant performance with a match-high 20 kills along with 12 digs. Freshman Alyssa Koval (Winneconne, Wis.) followed with 11 kills and 15 digs, while Smith and freshman Kayla Schiebel (Holmen, Wis.) added six kills each. Neeb directed the offense with 22 assists, and Rood chipped in 15. Freshman Brenna Valerio (Pewaukee, Wis.) recorded five of the team's 13 service aces. Bartelt led all players with 18 digs.

SMU was led by Kali Olson's 14 kills and Ayla Olson's 11 kills. Kinlee Grattan and Lavin LeJeune combined for 35 assists (18 and 17, respectively). Mackenzie Wenger collected 13 digs, and Kali Olson was a force at the net with six blocks.

WLC returns to action on Wednesday, September 9, when it travels to Waukesha for a 6 p.m. non-conference match against Carroll (2-1).
