MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team overcame a dismal first half shooting
performance and went on to defeat the Coe College Kohawks 72-63 in
the season-opening game for both teams on Friday night at the
Recreation Complex.
Danny Behm (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led four
players in double figures with 16 points. Kyle Plath (Lake Geneva,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and Marcus Zondag (Randolph,
Wis./Randolph) added 15 points apiece, while Nate Sorum (Mequon,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) finished with 10.
Despite shooting just 20.9 percent (9-43) in the first half, the
Warriors managed to hold a 24-23 lead at halftime. Coe built its
largest lead of the game, 40-30, at the 14:43 mark in the second
half. Trailing 48-41 with 10:19 to play, WLC used a 10-0 run to
hold on to the lead for good.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which shot 50 percent from the floor in the
second half, turned the ball over only nine times, opposed to 21
Kohawk turnovers.
Kyle Kuenstling led Coe (0-1), a member of the Iowa
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, with a game-high 26
points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-0) will face another opponent from the
IIAC on Saturday when it hosts Cornell College at 5 p.m. in the
Recreation Complex.
