ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team split a pair of games with the Rockford College
Regents on Wednesday afternoon, winning game one 9-3 and falling in
the second game 7-6 in eight innings.
Wisconsin Lutheran won the first game behind a strong pitching
performance from senior Michelle Shambeau (Two Rivers,
Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran). The Warriors broke the game open with
five runs in the sixth inning and never looked back.
There were many contributors in the offensive attack for
Wisconsin Lutheran. Four different players had two hits including
Megan Hafenstein (Johnson Creek, Wis./Johnson Creek), who scored a
run and had three RBIs. Breanne Duebner (Manitowoc, Wis./Lutheran)
also scored twice, drove in a run and stole two bases.
Shambeau earned her third win of the season by throwing all
seven innings, striking out eight with no walks. She gave up three
runs on four hits.
In the second game, the Warriors came up just short of the
sweep, giving up a run in the top of the eighth to lose 8-7.
Trailing 2-0, WLC put up five runs in the bottom of the third,
but Rockford came right back with four the next inning. In the
bottom of the sixth, Duebner knocked in the tying run with a
triple, but in extra innings the Warriors surrendered a run in
eighth and could not answer back.
Duebner was a double away from the cycle, going 4-for-4 with one
run, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Shambeau suffered the loss
despite pitching 4.2 innings and giving up only one run.
Wisconsin Lutheran (3-7, 1-1 NAC) is scheduled to travel to
Aurora University on Sunday for a doubleheader with the Spartans
beginning at 12 p.m.
