AURORA, Ill. - The Lakeland College Muskies
rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning and went on
to defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College 5-3 on Thursday afternoon in
the opening round of the 2008 NAC Softball Tournament at Jericho
Park.
Lakeland scored the first run of the game in the top of the
third inning after each team put up two scoreless frames. Wisconsin
Lutheran came back to tie the game on a solo home run by Breanne
Duebner (Manitowoc, Wis./Lutheran) in the bottom of the fifth.
WLC took a 2-1 lead an inning later when Ashley McNair (St.
Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore) singled home Lisa Cates (Lakeside,
Ariz./Blue Ridge).
Lakeland answered with a big seventh inning, scoring four runs
on four hits to take a 5-2 lead into the final half inning of the
game. Rachel Doege's (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) RBI
single plated Jamie Matz (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) to
cut the deficit to two runs. Cates flied out to centerfield to end
the game, leaving the tying runs on base.
Michelle Shambeau (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran) was
charged with the loss after she pitched all seven innings. She
allowed seven hits, five runs (four earned) and struckout
three.
Doege and Cates each went 2-for-4 to lead the Warriors at the
plate.
Wisconsin Lutheran (19-16) will face the loser of the No. 2
Benedictine University vs. No. 3 Marian College matchup on Friday
at 1 p.m. The Sabres and Eagles are set to square-off on Friday at
11 a.m.
