LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University Eagles
overcame a six-run deficit to defeat the Wisconsin Lutheran College
Warriors 9-8 on day two of the 2008 NAC Softball Tournament on
Saturday afternoon.
Wisconsin Lutheran got on the board in the top of the second
inning when Katie Sloan (Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) hit a solo
home run to left field. Ashley McNair (St. Joseph, Mich./Lakeshore)
followed with a single to center to keep the inning rolling.
A single from Jamie Matz (Hortonville, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran)
drove in two runs including McNair, finishing the three-run second
inning.
Emily Foster (Brookfield, Wis./East) added to the lead in the
top of third when she singled home Lisa Cates (Lakeside, Ariz./Blue
Ridge) and Rachel Doege (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls).
Doege added another RBI in the top of the fourth for a 6-0
advantage.
Benedictine cut the deficit to 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth
after plating four runs on five hits. WLC added two unearned runs
in the top of the fifth inning to push its lead up to 8-4.
The Eagles stormed back to take a 9-8 in the bottom of the fifth
by scoring five runs on six hits. The Warriors were unable to
generate any offense over the final two frames and saw their season
come to an end.
Doege, McNair and Foster each had two hits for Wisconsin
Lutheran. Michelle Shambeau (Two Rivers, Wis./Manitowoc Lutheran)
took the loss after pitching six innings, giving up nine runs on 11
hits. She struckout six and walked two.
Wisconsin Lutheran ends its season with a 19-17 overall record
and 16-8 in the NAC. The 19 wins set a school record for most wins
in a single season.
