WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team was defeated by Carthage College in a
non-conference game 72-59 on Sunday afternoon in its final game of
the Wisconsin Classic at Carroll University.
The Warriors found themselves in a hole early on, falling behind
9-0 to Carthage at the 16:14 mark. WLC trimmed its deficit back
down to six points at 11-5 before the Red Men extended their lead
back to double-digits for the majority of the first half. Wisconsin
Lutheran trailed 37-23 at halftime.
Carthage maintained its double-digit lead throughout the entire
second half. The Warriors used a 9-2 run to get as close as 11
points (45-34) with 13:57 left. However, the Red Men extended their
lead to a game-high 18 points and never looked back.
Senior Sam Siemers (Nicollet, Minn./Minnesota Valley Lutheran)
scored a season-high 17 points for the Warriors. Sophomore Alex
Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) added 11 points off
the bench. Senior Kyle Madson (Madison, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran)
finished with seven rebounds for WLC, which was out-rebounded by
Carthage 40-35.
The Warriors shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the floor for
the game, but just 11.1 percent (2-for-18) from three-point range.
WLC committed 18 turnovers, 12 of which occurred in the opening
half. Carthage, which committed 10 turnovers, out-scored the
Warriors 26-9 in points off turnovers.
Steve Djurickovic recorded Carthage's (4-1) first-ever
triple-double with 23 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. Max Cary
also contributed 20 points for the Red Men, who shot 40.3 percent
(27-for-67) from the floor.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-4) begins a stretch of three games in five
days on Tuesday, December 1 when it hosts Aurora University in its
Northern Athletics Conference opener at 7 p.m. at the Recreation
Complex.
