Spartans use late-inning surge to spoil Warriors' upset bid

Box Score Box score

MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College fell to the Northern Athletics Conference-leading Aurora University Spartans 9-1 on Thursday in the first game of a softball doubleheader at Warrior Field.

Wisconsin Lutheran held a 1-0 lead through five innings before the Spartans scored all nine of their runs over the final two frames to put an end to the Warriors' upset bid. WLC jumped on top of the Spartans early, plating its only run in the game in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Emily Foster (Brookfield, Wis./East) singled home junior Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran), who led off the inning with a walk.

The Warriors kept the Spartans off the scoreboard over the next four innings, but were unable to add to their own 1-0 lead. Clinging to a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth, Wisconsin Lutheran gave up a pair of runs, highlighted by a Briana Martin solo home run, and suddenly saw itself on the short end.

After the Warriors left two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning, Aurora took advantage of three errors and exploded for seven runs in the top of the seventh. Briana Martin added to her highlight reel by hitting a three-run home run in the inning. Aurora tallied nine of its 13 hits in the final two frames of the game.

Foster finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Warriors. Stephanie Sack (Granger, Ind./Michigan Lutheran) and Ashley Zautner (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) had the other two hits in the contest for WLC. Boelk gave up nine runs, four earned, in 6.1 innings in the circle. She fanned six and did not walk a batter.

Briana Martin went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored for the Spartans (19-3, 12-0 NAC). Anna Snyder picked up the victory by striking out 15 and allowing only four hits in seven innings of work.

Wisconsin Lutheran (8-17, 6-11 NAC) closes out its 2009 home slate by hosting Aurora in the second game of its doubleheader on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Warrior Field.
