MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
softball team scored all four of its runs in the third inning and
held on to defeat the Alverno College Inferno 4-3 on Friday in the
first game of a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at
Warrior Field.
The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played on Sunday
at noon at Warrior Field, but was moved up to Friday due to the
impending weather forecast.
Both teams played scoreless ball through the first two innings
before Alverno struck first in the top of the third. The visitors
used two hits and capitalized on a fielding error to take a 3-0
lead. The Inferno's lead did not last for long as the Warriors
stormed back with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the
inning.
Sophomore Emily Foster (Brookfield, Wis./East) drove in Emily
Helwig (Westland, Mich./Huron Valley Lutheran) and Katie Sloan
(Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran) on a two-run single to cut the
deficit to one run, 3-2. Morgan Dittmar (Oostburg, Wis./Manitowoc
Lutheran) and Foster scored WLC's final two runs of the game on a
fielding error off the bat of Maggie Mueller (Mt. Calvary,
Wis./Campbellsport) for the 4-3 lead.
The score remained 4-3 in favor of WLC the rest of the way as
neither team was able to plate a run. Alverno threatened in the top
of the seventh by loading the bases with only one out, but the
Warriors were able to get the final two batters out on a foul pop
and fly to left field to end the game.
Sloan went 2-for-4 at the dish to lead the WLC offense.
Sophomore Laura Konop (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) notched her
third win of the season by throwing all seven innings. She allowed
just four hits and struck out seven.
Andrea Spindler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Inferno
(2-3, 0-1 NAC) at the plate.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-7, 2-1 NAC) hosts Alverno in the second
game of its doubleheader on Friday beginning at 5:30 p.m.
