MILWAUKEE - Laura Konop (Germantown,
Wis./Germantown) tossed a complete-game shutout and went 4-for-4 at
the plate to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran College softball team to a
7-0 victory over the MSOE Raiders on Saturday in the first game of
a Northern Athletics Conference doubleheader at Warrior Field.
The games were originally scheduled to be played on MSOE's home
field, but were moved to Warrior Field due to field conditions.
Wisconsin Lutheran started the scoring early by plating a run in
the top of the first. After a lead-off single by Katie Sloan
(Omaha, Neb./Nebraska Lutheran), Konop followed with a double and
Sloan reached home on a throwing error on the play for the 1-0
lead.
The Warriors added to their lead in the second inning on RBI
singles by Maggie Mueller (Mt. Calvary, Wis./Campbellsport) and
Sloan. Freshman Emily Helwig (Westland, Mich./Huron Valley
Lutheran) plated the third run of the inning when she scored on a
passed ball.
After a scoreless third, WLC followed with a pair of runs in the
fourth on a Konop RBI double that scored Sloan. Konop later crossed
the plate when Jenny Boelk (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran)
reached on a error.
Konop, who finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored,
singled home sophomore Lindsey Phillips (Houston, Minn./Houston) in
the top of the sixth for the Warriors' final run of the game.
Sloan and Stephanie Sack (Granger, Ind./Michigan Lutheran) also
added a pair of hits for WLC. Konop improved her mark to 4-3 on the
season by allowing only two hits in seven innings of work. She
struck out nine and walked just two.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-7, 4-1 NAC) faces MSOE (0-3, 0-1 NAC) in
Saturday's second game beginning at 2 p.m. at Warrior Field.
